Peloton or Schwinn?

I'm currently using my fēnix 7S and Apple Watch with a basic no-name exercise bike and Apple Fitness+. I have a wahoo cadence sensor fitted to the crank.

This means my morning indoor bike ride syncs the heart rate data from the Apple Watch with Fitness+ but at the same time I am running the Indoor Cycling app on the fēnix which is paired with the wahoo cadence sensor.

At the end of the workout, I manually add the distance (measured on the exercise bike) to the activity on Garmin Connect.

We are moving house in January (hopefully) and setting up a new gym and we are looking to replace the cheapo bike with a Peloton or a Schwinn.

The Schwinn seems to be recommended by Apple for Fitness+ but I haven't used one.

I used a Peloton this summer in Big Sur and rode the Big Sur scenic route whilst in the gym (!) and have my Peloton account linked to my Strava account. However, I had to manually input the ride details into Connect: Peloton doesn't seem to have an export facility (other than directly linking to Strava or FitBit) so that's not an option. Strava exports as a TCX file but Connect can never import that as an activity.

Any ideas or recommendations for my usage?

  • We went with the Schwinn 800IC and we're going to see how we get on with apps like Peloton Digital and JRNY.  It's also compatible with Tacx app and allegedly should Bluetooth to the fēnix 7S. We will see.

  • The thing that's putting me off Peloton is that it would be pretty useless if Peloton go bust; they're in an "existential crisis" according to this article: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/aug/25/peloton-losses-shares-plummet

  • Get a peloton and get a DFC from Crowd supply. It will give you training status and VO2 max. Use it with my peloton and Tactix 7 works great. I also use sync my workout it import’s everything from peloton into Garmin connect.

  • I have both, the Peloton Bike+ and a Schwinn IC8. The Peloton is used much more due to ease of use regarding training selection. Also the Peloton bike quality simply feels better to me. And I really like some of the Peloton cycling classes (mainly intervals & arms and low impact ride; I use the other types as well - but not as often).

On the Schwinn I use(d) Zwift most the time. I find it okay, but a bit boring (watched Youtube and Netflix most of the times - I do this on the Peloton too, via iPad, but not as often); didn't do "multiplayer" with Zwift.

On both bikes I supply the heart rate via Fenix/Enduro broadcast. Zwift syncs to Strava and then over to Garmin Connect. With the Peloton I sync to Strava, and from there to Garmin with an app called RunGap (10 Euro/Dollar a year - it's not avaiable on Android, but there is something similar, I believe).

Works very good, however I just found out it seems that the Garmin ecosystem isn't using this Peloton-data for the new recovery recommendations, training status ect. (not totally sure about that yet). Solution is probably to record Peloton as indoor cycling and add the distance manually; however I like the complete data from Peloton with all the power data etc, so maybe I leave it as it is.

Btw, it really sucks that Peloton isn't supporting Garmin directly! As far as I know, this is Pelotons fault (not sure).

  • I eventually settled on using FulGaz on the Schwinn.  This exports to Strava but also sends you a FIT file afterwards by email that I can then import into Garmin Connect with all the details I could possibly want.

When I'm next back at home I'm going to try it with the JRNY app properly and see what metrics I can get from JRNY and import into Connect (somehow).

  • Syncmyworkout.com works super good. You get all data recorded from Peloton into Garmin.

  • I have a peloton and I use this. It costs a few dollars a year and works really well.

The dev also provides great support.

I have had my bike + for a year and I really like it. The trainers are very good also.

  • Personally I would try to get the ride data into Garmin Connect first, as that would give you the TE and exercise load that will go on to inform the other bio-feedback the watch offers.. on that basis I would avoid peloton as they, like Garmin (and others) don’t play kindly with each other in sharing ‘your’ data.. frustrating but that’s the way it is.. saying that, a quick google search will give ‘fixes’, but I’m not sure you will get all the relevant info
