Heart Rate when using HRM PRO

Hey guys,

I have a F7SS and I bought a HRM PRO for my swimming and running workouts.
I realized that when I finish a swimming workout, the watch asks if I want to download the heart Rate from the HRM, then it searches for the HRM PRO and all is OK.

During running workout I see that it does not search for the HRM and does not download the heart rate when I finish the training, but I can see that the running dynamics are displayed in the GC.

My question is: Does the heart rate is downloaded automatically from the HRM PRO or should I navigate to the activity in the watch and hit "download HR"?

I always thought it was done automatically in my running workout because I can see the running dynamics.

I tried to hit "download HR" for my last running activity and I saw that the time in the zones changed, so I believe my HR data was sent to the watch only after I hit the "download HR".

Can someone confirm this information?

Thanks a lot.

  • Swimming, it cannot connect to your HRM PRO, so it will tell you to download it later.

Running it is typically connected to your HRM PRO and collect its data. But wireless connections aren't without faults. You will always have an error rate transmitting data. The kind of transmission it uses, it will not retransmit on error, and so you will just lose the HR for 1 sample (1 seconds).
My typical error rate is 3-6% on transmissions. You can find that out with tools analyzing your FIT files like postrunner.
So if you will download the HR you will end up with slight changes in zones, especially if your training is in between zones, but nothing major.
Downloading HR has on the other side sometimes the funny side effect of duplicating your activity :D

  • Thanks for the info.

I actually had it (duplication of the activity) in my last running session, that's how I found out that if I download the HR, it changes a bit my time in the zones.

So, If I understood well, it is a bit more precise to download it in the end of the activity, right? That's way all the data stored in the HRM will be transferred without a connectivity issues.

  • In theory yes, but I would say it is pseudo precision as is mostly just one seconds missing and not something like 10 seconds at once. For 1 sec intervals it is not a lot of information lost and even if you would just have 2 sec intervals it would still be sufficient for training I guess for neatly everyone.

For me, it wouldn't be worth the hassle.

  • Yeah, I think you are right.

    Thanks for the info man.
    Enjoy!

  • And of you would like to avoid duplicating workouts you need to download HR data to your watch before you synchronise it with Garmin app.
I have the same situation and just stop synchronising it after some time, especially that all statistics might be broken after synchronising. For example, you will have run classified as tempo and after synchronisation with the strap classification will change to base.
It will be changed in workout but not in workload statistics, there you will still see activity as tempo.

BTW. Could you check do you have all run dynamic statistics visible from the beginning of the workout?
I have situation that sometimes my run dynamics, running power are visible after couple seconds, sometimes even more than a minute.

I was using the same strap with Fenix 6 and never had such issue, it started when I bought Fenix 7.

  • Thanks for the additional information.

I don't have the running power as it is not native and I didn't want to download any 3rd party app. I am actually  waiting for the FW 9.33 to be released for me this week, where it will be a native functionality. All other running dynamics statistics are visible since beginning of the running activity.

  • Thank you for answer.
    New FW was released today.
I’m not talking only about power but also other running dynamics statistics not being recorded from the beginning.
    I cannot add screen.

  • That's what I meant.
All my running dynamic besides running power (vertical oscillation, GCTB, vertical ratio), are visible since the beginning of the running activity.

  • Thank you.
min my situation, these graphs starts some time after beginning of the run.
I cannot add any screens hear :(
