Tactix 7 owners: have you seen it - when will v9.33 be released?

So, the Big Update is finally upon us, and Reddit claims 5% of users already got it as does the newly minted top forum page.

Per Garmin explanation for why there's no beta for Tactix 7:

For new software updates, the Tactix 7 will receive new official software updates at the same time as our Fenix 7 and Epix 2 series watches do.

I've checked with Garmin Express just now: nada.

Anybody with Tactix 7 got the update? Any idea what the rollout schedule for Tactix devices is?

  • The positive side effect is, that we might get even more polished version of the official release, once it is out for Tactix 7. Slight smile

  • As the matter of fact now I've became a bit disjointed since we get everything later than the Fenix owners. Me personaly I don't use the aviation features at all and I bet neither the vest majority of Tactix oweners. To integrate the aviation feature was a mistake from marketing point of view because more and more Tactix owners complaining about this.

  • Yeah great idea. Publish the firmware for a 7X for the T7 and then provide seperate installs for the T7 extra features. That way the firmware aligns and you just need to install the extra features manually if you want them! Much better.

  • I also fear that the avation features will also stop the supply of new features earlier, as the effort will simply be too much.

  • ok. rollout is at 60% now. what's the status for tactix? this is becoming a disaster now. i did NOT sign up for 2nd class status on a flagship watch

  • I am keen to see the Tactix 7 updated too. But my take is this., The 9.33 release is huge - probably the biggest I have seen Garmin do in the last few years. I think that is part of the problem for the company to manage. It's huge - new features, bug fixes. I think it's too big and should have been done in smaller parts but maybe the firmware structure changes to incorporate all the new stuff needs it to be big. A big release takes a lot of testing to get it right and no matter how much beta / alpha releases are a form of testing but not structured enough I guess to get all corner case bugs out. That seems to have happened and Garmin are going slow now with the release distribution.

the aviation features are regulated I heard in an earlier chat and could be deemed life critical. So they have to get it right when they release. Yep - maybe should have bought a watch that didn't have aviation features but I have and I will wait.

I also think timing of the release is designed to be out before the big Apple Watch pro release - whatever that is. I love Garmin but Apple are really good at betas for all that want them regardless of the device.

I must admit after all that - I am growing impatient and wonder what would happen if I tried to load the beta Fenix 7 firmware on my Tactix 7. Probably would work but the watch may reject it.

    Waiting....waiting...waiting...

  • I have thought about trying to sideload the F7 firmware onto my T7 - wouldn't know where to start though unless you just copy them over using a PC...

  • You are literally better off waiting a day or two. The previous release, v. 8.37, came out a week after Fenix. It was much smaller, and nobody seemed to care about the delay.

Now, if you still want to talk sideloading you have several things to consider.

First, you’d need a 9.33 update image that like betas comes via OTA only. Still, you can grab it from Garmin Express that stores update files locally, assuming you have a non-updated Fenix 7X lying around to kick off the update and download files.

Second, each update image is “watermarked” with a hardware identifier of the device it is supposed to be used with. So, said file needs to be patched with T7 identifier. Otherwise, it will not be used. Most likely, there are other things at play. There are some binary update file specs published on the internets from folks, but needless to say Garmin never published anything themselves. I wonder why Thinking

Last but not least, think what it would do with regards to warranty and future updates.

TLDR: You’ll probably spend more time trying to sideload the update and not brick your $1200 watch than just waiting for Garmin to push out an official version. Given how massive 9.33 update is, and it’s their first release under the new beta process, I’d cut them some slack. Especially given it’s an end of summer and typical vacation time.

  • Yeah you are correct I know. I just wish Garmin would be more vocal on here about when we can expect it. Just telling us it’s delayed and then nothing is frustrating.

  • Just FYI, 9.33 is now fully released for Fenix/Epix, Tactix 7 users are still left behind Unamused
