Indoor Rowing Coach?

Hi there!

I just bought a Fenix 7S Multisport watch. My main activity is Indoor Rowing and I don't seem to be getting a lot of support for that activity from my new Garmin.

Essentially, I can track the workout just fine, HR, Calories and rowing pace are all there, but I don't get any "advice" on how to improve my workout like I would for running and cycling.

Is there some Profile or App I can link with my watch to get some support for my chosen activity?

Thanks!

  • Fantastic information, thank you!

The Garmin connectivity is probably the biggest plus for me. I use an NPE Runn to connect my Sole F80 to Garmin, but no such add-on device really exists for rowers I don't think. So if I wnated Garmin connectivity (which I do), then I'd need a rower that can do it natively.

Check out PiRowFlo, discussed in this thread. I have it running on a Raspberry Pi with an ant+ module. It broadcasts the Waterrower speed, cadence, and power as ant+ FCE profile and the native indoor rowing app on the Fenix pairs and reads it so you can analyze all of the data later. I pair it up to Waterrower connect software for iOs  via Bluetooth on a mounted iPad for a better view of the live data than on the S4 monitor also.

Power from machine to machine will not be as consistent as a C2 but for those who like the Waterrower for noise/cost/etc, it makes it a viable option.

  • Thanks. This is not really what I am looking for, but still good to know.

I don't need anything fancy really, I would just like Garmin to offer their "Coach" functionality and VO2Max and all that for Indoor Rowing like they do for running and cycling. Oh well...

  • Thanks. I will look into it. At first glace it seems a bit like Kinomap, but it might be more in-depth

  • VO2Max

Garmin still doesn't even support vo2 max for treadmill running, even with power meter footpod and HRM-pro. So it's pretty unlikely we'll see vo2 max for indoor rowing any time in the near future.

    I don't know - I'm still hopeful.

I have both the Concept 2 rowing machine (RowErg) and indoor bike (BikeErg).  Both use the same PM5 controller, but with slightly different software.

When I connect the BikeErg to my tactix 7 and use my HRM-Pro HRM and Tempe sensors, using the Bike Indoor Activity, Garmin provides all the stats - including Speed, Heart Rate, Performance Condition, Bike Cadence, Power:Watts, Respiration Rate, Temperature, Stamina, and VO2Max.

Logic would dictate that it should be a short step to full compatibility for the RowErg, but things have moved very slowly in the Garmin/Concept 2 world in the past; so I'm optimistic, but not holding my breath.

  • Hi, good points. Garmin offers millions of sports profiles in their watches, but only running and cycling (outdoors/with Power Meter) contribute to all the analysis and deeper stats insights. I find that a brutal omission.
I am rowing indoors quite a lot. And rowing for weeks does (by Garmins view via Data) by far not the same effect than a couple of more intense bike sessions. That does not feel right.
there are not only cyclists and runners out here, we do all kinds of sports and rowing indoors has picked up pace a lot in popularity.

I hope they will start to treat more sports like they treat cycling/running.
