Does the gps work offshore surfing and fishing?

My gps on my Fenix 7S works great on dry land. However, the gps does not work when Im paddling offshore in the sea (the gps cuts out, stops working and doesn’t pick up anything). How do I fix this? Considering the watch is compatible with boating and surfing it should work.

  • GPS works globally as long as it is under clear sky. Without knowing exactly what you're doing it is hard to tell where the issue is. Perhaps you can post a link to one of your activities.

Oh, wait, I have an idea!

In some areas GPS signal might be jammed intentionally by military installations.

  • Interesting! It is definitely not military zones. It is nowhere near any military (I live out back in New Zealand). I have attached a picture of a windsurf where I usually do about 4 kms.

weird. I have attached two pictures from a surf where I caught about ten waves, and only one got picked up.

the gps literally just stops working when I go like 70 metres off shore  in the ocean

  • When you say “paddling” do you mean on a surfboard with your hands? GPS devices need direct line of sight to GPS satellites - if your watch is going  underwater every few seconds it can’t maintain contact with satellites.

The “open water swim” setting is designed to try and combat this issue, and you might be able to change the activity type to something more suitable afterwards. The other thing tk try is just to keep your watch out of the water. Swimmers sometimes do this by clipping th watch to their head (e.g. goggles or cap).

DC rainmaker has written about this issue a lot. Here’s one article about it:
