Waypoints In a Course

For an out and back course, are waypoints tied to a particular mile marker or do they go both ways? For example, if a course is 50 miles out and back, is a waypoint at mile 30 on the way out also at mile 70 on the way back or do there need to be waypoints for both 30 and 70? Thx.

  • If you add a Course Point (I think this is what you meant; a waypoint is different), it is tied to one point on the course.  You'll need one at 30 and 70.

  • Thx. I’m a little confused. I have an Enduro 2 and when I am adding data to new screens, the only options in the Navigation section are waypoint-related. I see no mention of Course Points. Also, this is the course I’m working with …

… and my question is whether, e.g. the first aid station (Mayqueen - miles 12.5 and 87.5 due to out and back course) will show up on my watch in both direction when there is only one way/course point. Thx again.

  • Navigation section are waypoint-related

The Garmin course creation/navigation ecosphere, while is gradually improving, is somewhat disjointed across their product lines.  Many of the watch navigation data field names (in my opinion) were carried forward from previous generations of handheld devices where waypoints were independent geo locations (not associated with a track/course/route).  With that said, outdoor watch (like your Enduro 2) waypoints data fields (eg distance to next waypoint) is really talking about a point (course point) that is embedded within a course.  The easiest way to create a course w/ course points is in Garmin Connect.  Once created, just sync to your watch via Garmin Connect Mobile.  When you navigate the course, the course points names and distance to will show up in the Up Ahead data screen.  I'm not familiar with how onx builds its courses and works with the Enduro's navigation functions.

Quick question: what is the term for a location on a map that you can save on your watch and have it alert you when you're in that area?

Example: I'm doing a 100 mile backpack trip. I don't use the "Do Course" setting b/c I just want to track the hike in a regular way and possibly do a few other trails.  However, I do want my watch to notify me when we get to a certain GPS location.  And I want to be able to see a certain GPS location on my watch if I look ahead on the map/trail.  Finally, I want to be able to navigate to that point if need be.

    Thanks in advance!

The on-watch terminology uses both Locations (via Saved Location Function) & Waypoints (Project Waypoint Function).  Both of those function save a geolocation in the lctns.fit file as a stand alone location (not part of a course/route).  To be notified that you are near a particular location, you'll need to set a proximity alert tied to that location.

  • Got it, thanks! Used the Explore app and website to figure it out. And yes, I set proximity alerts.  Cool!  Thanks again.

  • Explore app

I didn't discuss the Explore App, but that is certainly another way to create courses and manage waypoints/locations.  Glad it is working for you.
