Issue with Tactix 7 ballistic edition DOF capture

So I noticed that on my tactix there is an error when capturing DOF. If you select capture using the compass, it will take the reading and then subtract 10 degrees. I have measured with my Kestrel (verified with my Cammenga 3H) and the initial reading is very close, so the compass is correct, its that somehow it subtracts 10 degrees when inputing in the software. Anyone else notice that. How do I notify Garmin since Im sure not a ton of people play with this feature.

Are you talking about ballistic app? It might be due to compass freeze that many of us are experiencing.

Yes in the ballistic app. The issue is that my compass works great and reads almost the same as my mil spec 3H.

The discrepancy could be due to magnetic declination. Your Cammenga 3H would be affected by that and does not compensate for it, while the T7P compass may be displaying true north (I have the same watch by the way, but not looked into this yet.)

The magnetic declination is as high as 20 degrees in parts of the continental US, so 10 degrees where you are located is quite possible.

You are correct. I was somewhere where the declination was 3 degrees west and it subtracted 3 degrees from the magnetic reading to give a true reading. What is neat is that I dont think the Kestrel does this - but actual true north does make more sense for calculating ballistics.

The Kestrel doesn't use location information even if it is paired with a smartphone. The only thing it gets from the smartphone is latitude for Coriolis effect compensation.

The kestrel uses its internal compass to capture DOF if you want it to. My vectronix gives the kestrel the distance to target, angle to target and DOF. The phone gives it latitude. It uses the DOF and latitude to calculate the Coriolis effect.

Correct. I was just saying that the Kestrel doesn't have a way of compensating for magnetic declination because it doesn't have location information (even though a smartphone could supply that).
