Dual grid

Hello, one of the functions I find interesting with my Fenix 7X is the possibility to save my position using a dual grid system. As shown in the manual, I have set up a combination of buttons to show my position using dual grid and it works fine. Whenever I pressed the hot keys programmed, a screen shows up and my position is displayed using lat-long and the coordinates format I choosed. While the screen is displayed, I have the option to save it and when I do I get a message telling me it was saved. The problem I have is that this saved position will only show in the coordinates chosen in system and format, it does not show anymore the dual grid system. Maybe I did not understand it the way it should, but I was thinking that the dual grid position would be saved and I would be able to get it back as needed.

Just to make sure I am i clear enough, The format I used is UTM. When I press the hot key combination I have picked in system,s settings, a screen shows up showing my position in Lon-lat and also in UTM format. When I press START to save it, it is saved. When I go back to navigate and  to saved positions, I see the position I just saved but the recording only shows the UTM format, I wish it would show the lon-lat and the UTM format like it was shown on the watch before saving.

Is there a way to do this? Or is it not possible to do this. Since there is already a function to save my position, I would believe this dual grid function would save the two positions.

Thank you

  • It's the same with my Fenix 6.
You can display the dual grid, the position is only saved in the currently used format.
If you need the position in the other format later for an evaluation, you can make a screenshot in addition to saving.

  • I wonder if it's any different on Tactical editions!

  • It's the same with the Tac. It didn't bother me so far since I set up the format the way I use it externally anyway.

But there is a workaround - at least with 11.28 (I didn't  update so far b/o the back light behavior): you can switch the format in systems settings and then you'll get this format in your previously saved  favourites too even if you saved it in another format.

  • I think it is not really true that the watch saves the location in the currently used format. The watch actually just saves the location in latlong format, regardless of the format you choose and regardless of whether you use dual grid display or not.

If you go into the folder of the watch, retrieve the Lctns.fit file, convert it to gpx format and open it in a text editor, you will see all the saved locations in latlong.

I think the reason for saving everything in latlong is that it's universally unambiguous and can be easily recognized by any GIS software. The watch itself can also easily convert and display it in any format you choose.

Nevertheless, I just discovered this issue on my new watch and was quite annoyed. Just as there are reasons for wanting to view the live GPS fix in different formats, there are reasons for wanting to read off the saved location in different formats. Furthermore, it would seem easier to program the software to display dual formats for both live and saved locations than to program it to display dual formats for live but only the selected format for saved. You would almost have to bend over backwards to restrict users to seeing only one format when recalling the saved locations!

For the workaround I proposed it doesn't really matter in which format it saves it in fit-file and this wasn't what I wanted to say anyway since I don't care which format postion is saved. However it shows your previously set favorite in that very format you set your Garmin to at that very moment. I'd use that very often, since it comes in very handy depending on which chart I use that very moment. Used it with all firmware from 8.xx except 13.xx which I never installed.

Absolutely. In absence of which I proposed the aforementioned workaround.
