Fenix 7s Touch and strength training

Hello everyone
I'm completely new to Garmin watches but I recently got a Fenix 7s because I want to use it when I'm doing my strength training.
I mainly use touch (as I'm used to that from my older smartwatches) but I can't seem to get the touch function to work properly during training. The exact problem is the start button and then the lap button (for instance when I'm finish with the set etc.). Is it me that is doing something wrong or isn't it possible to only use touch during activity/workout?

  • Works fine for me.  It's changed, from the 945 widget, in that you have to confirm a start/pause/stop of the activity, which is annoying, but doable, once you realize it, maybe this is what you're seeing?

To clarify, the buttons work fine, but when you start/pause/stop, you have to "confirm" each of those, or it won't complete the action (start/pause/stop).

  • Thanks fir your reply. So does that mean youu only use touch all through strength?

  • Even just going into the activity menu (where you choose activity) I have to yse the start button. Touch is activated both in general and activity.

  • You said it's on for both general and activity.

Once it's 'On', you should be able to control the Strength activity using Touch only (using scrolls, swipes and taps) by either tapping or 'swiping from outside in' where there is an active button marked. You can also use it to start, stop activity and move between sets etc.

So once you're ready to start an activity and have the workout selected, try tapping next to the start button, an option should appear to start workout, which you can confirm with a tap:

Still, i find the physical buttons to be much more reliable, and typically i disable Touch during all activities. Sweat and water  them get in the way.

  • I just retried it. The main problem is the lap button, when I have finished my last rep and want it to go to my resting period/next exercise. It says next exercise at the button and has a small marker pointing to the lap button but no matter where I tap or swipe nothing happens and I'm forced to use the lap button. Also how to enter the workout menu when you're on your home screen in general eithout using the start button.

  • If you have a date on the watchface, you can long-press it to get to your calendar, and then if you have a workout coming up in the calendar you can go right to it and start it.

I don't think you can just go to the list of all activities to select from without pressing the start button, at least not from the stock watchfaces.

Left or right swipe on the watchface don't do anything right now, could be used to access these activities for those who have strong preference for touch control, though this could potentially lead to an activity starting by itself.

Re: the lap button not being pressable with touch gestures, I think it's a bug. You can log it in the beta reports here: https://forums.garmin.com/beta-program/fenix-7-series/public-beta-reports/i/public-beta-8-35 if you feel strongly about it. It may be related to the recent improvements in Strength activity.

  • I don't know if there's any way to start an activity (any activity, not just this one), without the button, from a stock watch face, although I'm sure there are non-stock ones that allow for this, through touch.

When there's one of those button-bar indicators, if you carefully touch right at the bar, you can control it entirely through touch at this point, although it's "clumsy", in that it's possible to press something else, accidentally, while trying to "push the button using the touch-bar area".  I use the buttons for this, mostly, for this reason, but it's possible to do almost an entire workout (again, any workout, or most), with very little button use, if you're motivated/determined, IME... ;-]
