Should I use the Run/Walk/Run technique on all my runs?

Hello,

I am in Week #4 of the Galloway Half Marathon Plan. The past 3 weeks have included Goal Race Pace Repeats, and until today's session, I have not been able to hit the goal. Today was my best workout as I completed the first 3 800-meter runs at goal. However, the last 2 were 45+ secs slower. I bonked badly.

Two weeks ago, Jeff introduced the Run/Walk/Run technique, which I have been using on my long, easy, and Magic Miles runs since. Should I be using R/W/R on Goal Race Pace Repeats also? Thoughts?

Thanks and God bless,
Genesius

  • It depends on what your Half Marathon setting is, if you have set a time to finish and you are missing your goal pace targets then I suggest you adjust the target finish time to suit. If you have just set-up the plan to complete a Half then walking for the "rest" periods would be OK

Remember you are only 4 weeks into a 14-16 week programme and they are designed to adjust based on your ability - trust me it does get easier

  • Thanks, Duggs. I'm sure it will get easier, and the next workout is Speed Repeats: 6 x 800 at 20-40 secs faster than my Goal Pace 800's. We'll see.
