Hiking Long Distance: Two Questions

I've done several very long multi-day hikes with my Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar. It's awesome in almost every way and has performed very well. In the "extended" power hiking mode I get around 130 miles before I have to charge it up!

My question: is there a way to change the data screens in the Hiking - Courses - Do Course activity? I changed data screens in the regular hiking activity, but it doesn't change anything in the "do course" selection in the hiking activity.

Also, in the extended power mode (for hiking), can I make the screen stay on for 15 seconds instead of just 8 seconds?  For me, 8 seconds isn't quite enough when I'm looking ahead on the map.

I assume you are speaking of the additional Data Screens that are displayed during the activity when Navigating.  You can adjust those screens under Main Menu=>Navigation=>Data Screens=>Screen1/2/3/4.

Also, in the extended power mode (for hiking), can I make the screen stay on for 15 seconds instead of just 8 seconds?  For me, 8 seconds isn't quite enough when I'm looking ahead on the map.

Set the backlight timeout in the System=>Backlight=>During Activity=>Timeout menu.

  • Thanks for the comments! I appreciate it.  However, when I change those settings it only applies to the regular hike setting, not the "do course" setting in extended power mode. For some reason when it's in the "do course" hiking activity and/or the "extended power mode" I can't change the settings.

  • Make sure the backlight settings for "extended power mode" in the power mode settings are set to "don't change":

Main Menu > Power Manager > Power Modes > Extended > "Don't change".

I'm not sure why the backlight timeout setting is different when you are doing a course, versus not doing a course; possibly that's a bug.

  • Thanks! That's helpful. Yes, it may be a bug that will be fixed in the future. Not a big deal, just a little annoying. Now to figure out how to get rid of some of those data screens for the "do course" activity under hiking.

  • See the first part of D_Estes' post above - those datascreens that pop up when you're doing a course are not configured inside the activity, but rather they're configured inside the Navigation menu in the watch's main menu.

  • Thanks, that's helpful. I think I have it figured out. I appreciate your help! I read the manual twice and typically understand these things, but this puzzled me. And yes, as I said, I think the screen timeout is a bug because it still times out after 8 seconds when I'm hiking using the "do course" option. Oh well - I'm loving the maps and the extended power mode. I can hike for around 130 miles (and around 5-6 days) on one charge!

Don't feel bad, I'm an engineer and it still took me close to 2 years before I ever learned about customizing the navigation datascreens Slight smile
