Fenix 7 Base vs 955, are you kidding me?

Reducing the price is amazing, congrats to everyone that is able to score such a fantastic ecosystem and watch.

But now I feel duped buying the base Fenix 7.

The 955 is $200 less than the base Fenix 7.

The 955 basically has the same screen. [Not really a complaint I suppose, but I'm reaching for any sort of "upgrade" the $700 Fenix has over the $500 955)

The 955 has 2x as much memory, are you serious? The base Fenix 7 has 16gb and the 955 ($200 less!) has 32gb.

The 955 has multi-band the base Fenix 7 does not.

The memory and multi-band are the largest slaps in the face. The furthest stretch I can reach for is I paid $200 more for less memory in exchange for ~10 more hours of GPS time.

  • Most Garmin watches has bugs at launch. You can go to the 945LTE forum and say that. We have, 1 year after the launch, the same bugs, 1 YEAR! Come on, even something so easy like the airplane mode to disconnect everything failed. 1 $%&## YEAR!

I didn't say ALL bugs get fixed in the first few months. I said most do. And I stand by that statement still - MOST bugs do get fixed in the first few months. Yes, sometimes also SOME bugs remain even after a year. But for the most part all the major ones are usually worked out fairly early.

Also understand that some bugs are more "critical" to some people than to other people. For instance, you're clearly very upset about airplane mode not working right, whereas I wouldn't even know if my airplane mode works or not because I literally never use it, so to me it's not a critical bug that I'm cursing Garmin over.

If you're hoping for a watch that is totally 100% free from all bugs, you're in for disappointment because there is literally no smartwatch in existence that is totally bug free.

  • I suggest you watch this to get another "take" on the 955: https://youtu.be/sG6qoA1g9PY

955 seems better on paper than in reality... I wouldn't stress too much.

  • Second this. I had a Fenix 6 Sapphire that I absolutely loved. I "upgraded" to a Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar (because you can't get Sapphire without Solar in the 7) and I can no longer read the display is most lighting. Granted, I need light vision correction/I wear readers for reading, but I could see instantly feel a difference in not being able to read the new watch, even with brightness turned nearly all the way up. The Solar Glass diminishes the contrast enough that I returned it.

Fenix 7 Standard is more legible, but then it doesn't have multi-band which is the main reason I wanted to upgrade.

Hoping a Fenix 8X Sapphire will be in the works and we won't be required to get Solar glass to get the Sapphire model. Solar glass is now a deal breaker for me because I don't want to wear reading glasses just to be able to read the watch on my wrist.

  • Have you looked at the Tactix 7 Standard? It's essentially a Fenix 7X with sapphire glass but no solar

  • Forerunner® 255 -- 350 USD --  All Systems + Multi-Band Mode -- Why not to add Multi-Band to base Fenix 7/7X ...

  • Good question, but left unanswered by Garmin

Most likely due to the shortage of chips at the time of manufacture.  Garmin probably had to make the choice of where to allocate the Multi-Band chips they had - all to the fenix 7 series and delay the availability of the Multi-Band 255/955, or use a different (non-Multi-Band) in the intro level fenix 7 model and go ahead with the 255/955 earlier than would otherwise be possible.

    Just my US$0.02

  • Already discussed here many times. Because non sapphire models has chip without multi band support. I'm also upset, because I have F7 and 255 has extremely better GPS compared with F7 even on all satellites WITHOUT MULTI-BAND! My friend has 255s and stepson has 255. It's huge difference compared to F7. Already sent pics somewhere here.
