FR255 multi band GPS vs. F7

Garmin are You serious? The "basic" FR255 gets multi band GPS and F7 don't? It's a shame Frowning2️.

  • Came here to make the same complaint. I got the non-sapphire 7x because I had read that the sapphire was less clear/readable compared to non-sapphire. I wanted multiband as an option for difficult gps environments but didn’t want the sapphire glass.

then my non-sapphire 7x arrived and side-by-side the screen is way more reflective and less crisp especially in darker environments without the backlight on, compared to my F6pro that it was replacing.

i have had the 7x for less than a month and the 955 seems to tick all of the boxes better and at a better price (multiband plus 32gb) than the 7x except for the LED and extra battery life, which I might sacrifice for an extra $300 in my pocket.

  • In previous gen the FR 945 was the same price as the Fenix 6 pro, considering they had the same features.

So i though it was ok to buy a Fenix 7 standard instead of waiting for the FR955.

So now Garmin releases the 955 for $200 less. $500 was the price for the FR745 in the last gen.

Now the 955 for $500 with the same 1.3" screen and much lighter weight seens a much smarter buy.

Well, I can't complain that Garmin is reducing prices. This is a good thing, considering their products are usually too overpriced.

But I can definitely complain that they sold us Fenix7 watches with locked multi-band GPS and only 16Gb memory for $700 when they were planning to release the 955 (and 255) with multi-band and 32Gb.

Garmin used us like beta testers, while we are still facing lots of software bugs and even hardware issues like the compass thing.

Now the least we can expect from Garmin is that they release software updates ASAP unlocking the multi-band GPS on all capable devices and including all the new features.

And well they also need to send as new strap pins in no magnetic material to fix the compass.

  • Yes, it's crazy. How can they justify that ? Just with a few months difference... Shame on them.

  • You are assuming that it is the same GNSS chip part in all of these devices and that might not be the case.

One possibility is that the lower spec fenix 7 models are binned chips that have a defect that prevents the dual-band from working but is otherwise OK. Remember that they put these watches out at the height of a supply chain crisis in a pandemic and cannot meet demand. The supplier may  not have the chips to sell to meet Garmin's order.

The fenix 7 base model may also outsell the f255 and f955 combined.

It's also obvious that the software comes in hot every generation. They are still obviously rolling out a ton of features that aren't finished while trying to stabilize the platform on new hardware. This is not great but also isn't new nor unique to Garmin.

  •   I got a non-working compass and a GPS no multibande and 16GB for $700. (Fenix 7) I am  disappointed seeing the price tag forerunner955.))

  • if you are unsatisfied you should return the watch. That is a feedback that Garmin will notice.

  • There is also the locking of HRV reports to a chest strap while the Forerunner gets it on wrist. I thought the Epix and Fenix line are supposed to be the most feature complete of their lines. The "Can do just about everything" line.

  • May be added secretly under the same name.

  • Quit crying.

You try to make out the Garmin came round your house and forced you to buy a watch when you did.

Your choice, you bought the watch when you did. There is always a price to pay for being a first mover or early adopter and its your choice to buy or to wait. This has always been the case in the technology industry where advancements move fast.

Next time dont buy so fast, and wait and see what happens. Trouble is it doesnt matter how long you wait there will always be newer and better tech in the next version of anything, and top level technology always filters down to the cheaper models at some point.

As far as bugs are concerned, then yes they have to fix them, but software driven technology will always have bugs, some minor some serious.

I have a F7X SS, and yes the bugs are annoying, but cheaper watches inheriting the technology goes with the territory of buying first.

  • I'm not crying, it's just that the line of watches is built not quite honestly, fairly. And so I'm happy with my Fenix 7.
