how to display cadence

You have to start a cycling activity to see your cadence. It should be on the default data screen, but you can add cadence data fields to any custom data screen as well.

Hmmmmm. It's not on the main screen and trying to add a screen or edit it while on the bike doesn't sound like it's something I want to try so I guess I'll just suffer without it.

You can add cadence information to a data screen for any of the bike activities even without a cadence sensor connected. You do not need to be on the bike to do it. You set up the data screens outside of the activity. Then, if you do have a cadence sensor paired in Sensors and Activities, you will see cadence information when you are cycling.

What philipshambrook said. You can set up your data screens whenever you want and configure them to your liking.

Activities&Apps -> any activity -> settings -> data screens (it's easier if you do it on your phone). 

I was wrong, by the way. It's not on the default screen, but you can put it on there if you want to. 

On the app? I have a severe aversion to apps due to a previous job - I learned how to exploit all of them - so I don't have anything on my phone. I may try to put the app on an old burner that I have though and try it out. You can edit the data screens? Cool!

On the watch too. Might be worth your while to read the manual. 

You don't have Garmin Connect? Do you use Garmin Express, then? 

Correct on using desktop Garmin Express. When I plug the watch into my Mac, it syncs up through that and I use the web site to view/edit/etc.
