Routing when off-course

I have been using Garmin Connect to create routes (Courses) which I then sync to my Fenix 7. I am using the "Use Map" setting for Routing as I want to get Turn-by-Turn notifications. This setup works great, until I miss a turn. At that point, my Fenix re-routes me to the end of the route and ignores the rest of the course. Ideally I would like to include a number of Waypoints (Course Points)  so that that the re-rerouting would direct me to the next Waypoint versus directly to the end of my route. I have also tried using the "Follow Course" setting, but really like having TBT with street names. Are there better solutions or approaches out there?

  • You will get TBT alerts with the "Follow Course" setting as you approach a turn if you are navigating a course.  You won't, however, have the initial detailed list of turns like you get when the routing is calculated by the watch.  If you wander off course with the "Follow Course" setting, the watch will alert you that you are off course, but will not recalculate the route.  At that point, you can consult the map on your watch to see where you deviated from the route and decide the best way to get back on the original planned route.

  • Was this resolved?  It seems I get the same thing.  Kayaking this week, I was on course for several miles and things were working perfectly.  Suddenly, I received a "Course Complete" message even though I was 6 miles from completion.  As I kayaked downstream and tried to restart the course, it appeared as though it was wanting me to return to Start.  This flaw makes a $800 watch pretty useless for recording course completions.

  • I have mostly give up on using the "Use Map" or navigation feature when I am following a course.   I now use "follow course" and keep my watch screen on the map visual which shows me if I am on course and alerts me when I am off course.  This works really well for hiking, but is not ideal for cycling as it does not provide any reliable turn-by-turn alerts.  The "follow course" navigation mode does provide excellent trip data and allows you to pause, resume and save your course / trip.  I create my courses on Komoot or download them from AllTrails.  I then sync them to my Fenix so I can use them offline and this has been very reliable.

I am still very disappointed in the "Use Map" navigation capability and had quite a bit of buyers remorse after my $700 watch purchase.

  • Yes "Use Map" basically does not work...it takes ages to calculate the course and often fails. TBT navigation with "follow course" is indeed quite poor for cycling and will miss many turns. It is a pity to have to keep the screen on the map visual.

I hope TBT will improve but I am not expecting too much...
