Fenix 7 GPS accuracy underbridge

Hi,

while hiking through an under crossing I recognized a strange behavior of the GPS (see picture). I was using Fenix 7 Solar with firmware 7.35 and GPS 2.27 with all satellites activated in the hiking profile.

Has anyone any recommendations for me to avoid these “spikes” in the route while crossing tunnels or under crossings?

Greetings

Sebastian

  • Hi. I am disappointed from advertising Multi frequency GPS accuracy.

My older fenix 6 pro was better (maybe I have luck to good piece) but when I compare 7X SS with 6pro on same routes, it is exactly the same, maybe 6pro looks better.

  • I'm surprised to read that. I also come from the 6x (still have it) and the 7x is WAY better than the 6x for me. It's night and day. In fact I can't remember having owned a GPS watch that nailed it as the 7x (my first was a Garmin 201 long long ago ;-) )

  • I don't understand why am I opposite. Everybody talk about accuracy of 7x ss, and I have Multi Gns and Multi frequency and 1sec turn on, and my maps of activities in Connect looks exactly same 6 and 7. 7x cannot stick the route, (I don't run in city with high buildings and heavy Forrest) 80% of activities are open air.

  • If you think you might have a problem with your watch contact Garmin Support. Like others, I continue to be amazed at how good the GPS is on the Epix/F7. These runs were on narrow single track with steepover hangs and tunnels. Cannot fault the GPS even in the tunnels.

  • I made two runs (similary) on two ongoing days. Up is fenix 7x Sapphire solar, down is Fenix 6pro. I focus on few corners from Connect, made your own decision.

  • Yes, they are. But F6Pro seems better which I can't understand, because I'm happy that I sold that GPS crap and now I have very good experience with F7. But still my spare Forerunner 15 can fight with F7 in GPS accuracy! No step forward with F7 vs. FR15. I was amazed how good the FR15 is, when I sold F6Pro and waited for F7.

  • Maybe try latest beta FW, it has new GPS version too.

  • I am on 8,16 beta relase. I want give that F7X saphire solar few days to set on... my friend have normal fenix 6 (not pro) and he has terrible lines after workout in Connect. But I have another strange feeling , that 6pro with nice map lines has worst pace graph in steady run than f7x ss. Maybe is it my own strangeness...

  • I dont see any issues here, both tracks are good.

I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of what GPS accuracy is and what it should be.

You cant measure the same route on 2 different devices on different days and compare the results in a meaningful way. The only sensible way of doing it, is you run with both watches at the same time. On different days, the weather has changed, the position on the satellites in the sky have changed, the angular positions of the satellites with respect to each other and you are different, the number of visible satellties are different and the respective ratios from different GPS constellations will be different.

I have a 7XSS and so far I have found the GPS bonkers good. I use it for navigation in the hills etc

Perfect GPS reception gives an accuracy of around 3m. So draw a circle with that radius, so a 6m diameter circle, and thats your circle of error with perfect reception. Anything less than perfect will increase that circle diameter. Call it circle of confusion to steal a phrase from optics.

If you want to see this in action, start an activity like hiking and stand still for 10 minutes. The recorded track will jump about randomly around the point where you are standing, its called GPS nesting.
