Weather Rain Forecast accuracy

I find the Garmin Weather widget fairly good at forecasting hourly temperature, but the rain probability tends to be way off.

Often it will indicate no chance of rain, yet it may have been raining for a few hours and continues to.

I find Open Weather to be basically spot on for rain forecasting.

Obviously there isn't much that can be done about it except by Garmin, it could be my location, Sydney Australia.

How do others find the Weather rain forecasting ?

  • The weather on my watch is usually within 10 degrees of the Apple weather app. Where is garmin getting its weather info? SoCal here, not much rain

  • I'm having issues with the weather glance too. It constantly shows wrong temperature and forecast. Even if it's set not to use GPS location.

Is there any way that I can change the source of this info?
    Thanks!

  • The settings > about screen shows that it looks like weather info may come from the NOAA  https://www.weather.gov/ so you'll probably want to go there.  If that site doesn't match what shows up on your watch then it's a Garmin issue.. .or you haven't picked up a good GPS signal in a while... I dunno.  If the temp on your watch matches the NOAA website but you still disagree, you'll have to complain to the NOAA.

The Nat'l Weather Service/National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration is a gov't organization in the United States.  They likely get their temps from local airport temperature measurements, satellites,.. something like that.  And they make their data service freely available with a weather API interface.  There are tons of gov't and private organizations that do the same thing (openweathermap, darksky, Weather Underground, Accuweather, Met.no (Norway), ... and many others.

I doubt they all have their own thermometers everywhere in the world so they either pull from one another, there is a delay for some, or they use different technologies to get their report (satellite? personal weather stations from hobbyists?  I dunno)

  • On Android I dont seem to have a "Settings --> About" screen at all.

In any case NOAA https://www.weather.gov appears to only be for the US.

So maybe other countries use different weather sources.

  • I was talking about the About screen on the actual watch

It appears so.  You can go to

https://api.weather.gov/points/{latitude},{longitude} in a browser to get a json view of a location

    https://api.weather.gov/points/39.7456,-97.0892 somewhere in Kansas
https://api.weather.gov/points/63.1252,103.754 would be somewhere in Russia but doesn't show anything

I don't understand why these gov't sites wouldn't publish world coordinates but I guess they don't want every weather app in the world slamming their servers just cuz it's available.

    Norway's Met.no can do everywhere

    format:

    https://api.met.no/weatherapi/locationforecast/2.0/compact?lat=63&lon=103

So who knows where they get their weather data then.  Maybe they don't need to publish their license, they have their own service, or it's stated somewhere else
