UP AHEAD BUG: Fenix 7X complains about exceeding 200 course points but I've added only 10 course points to a course!

OK, I am going going to run a 100 km trail race. I thought that I should utilize a fancy new UP AHEAD feature, which would be great to track distances to aid stations in the race. After all, it seems the feature has been created just for that. Right?

I go ahead and spend a bunch of time preparing the race course in Garmin Connect and adding 10 course points for the aid stations on the course. Then I sync to the watch.

The result: The watch gives me a warning that "200 course point max. exceeded. Final 191 points will not be shown".

That is terrible! First of all, that is terribly confusing, because I've added only 10 course points. But ok, I know, Garmin Connect, without asking me, decided to insert the other 381 course points for all the turns on the course even though I don't really need that. But the real question is whether I'll see all my 10 course points for all the aid stations - that is what I actually care about! Can anyone tell me?

Anyone from Garmin can comment on this? Why there is such a ridiculously small limit for the number of course points? This watch has 16 GB of memory after all!

I should add that I know there is a work around of creating a course in PlotARoute.com and adding course points there, and then syncing via the USB cable. But nevertheless, for a typical user who want to run or ride an ultra distance and use UP AHEAD feature, and plan everything using Garmin tools, the feature is simply not working as intended!

  • Change it from „use map“ to „route“.

I never ever use the "use map" option. That doesn't really work for ultramarathon distances - too slow and too battery consuming, and doesn't guarantee to stick to the original course. Everything said above applies to course navigation.

Again, the point of this discussion is not for me to find a workaround (I know how to solve this problem), but for Garmin to do a proper solution that works for everyone without having to jump through a hoop.

  • But custom course points are?

  • But custom course points are?

    Yes

EDIT: Confirmed today during a lunch walk.  Created a course in Garmin Connect with multiple custom Course Points.  Downloaded .fit file and copied to watch NewFiles folder via USB.  Walk activity navigated the course.   Up Ahead feature worked just fine without any TBT notifications.

  • So you are basically saying that using Garmins sync feature via web to app to watch doesn't not work and we have to use a USB connect to a computer to manually copy over a downloaded .FIT file of the course for this to work. WTH Garmin?!? This is so back asswards!!

  • It seems Garmin could give a flip. I've reported it to them in detail several times. They keep asking me if I created the course in Garmin or a third-party. Well Garmin course creation sucks as it only follow popular heatmaps. Many ultra mountain races goes off course to keep congrestion down. So then you have to manual do a point by point line around the trail IF Garmin even shows it, which it typically doesn't. I've used free https://onthegomap.com/ to create a better route than Garmin then just go back and add my waypoints in Garmin. If you import a Caltopo or Gaia they will appear as generic points but the labels will be there. However, Garmin asks me if I export as a .FIT file. I tell them I use their web app to sync the file which should convert to a FIT file anyways when being synced to the watch. Obviously the TBT directions should not be exported if not using the Guide feature. Seems Garmin does this by default which cause that point limitation I didn't know about. I hope to try the workaround but it's BS. Garmin doesn't care as long as the other 90% of it's users don't complain or use the feature.

  • This thread is outdated. There is now a toggle in Garmin Connect to enable/disable turn notifications. Course points for turn prompts will only be added when enabled.

  • Yes, when loading courses via Garmin Connect TBT course points can now be excluded.

However I think this issue will resurface soon in a slightly different form. Strava is working on adding Garmin compatible course points to their course editor. I'd very much prefer to use Strava's editor because it is much better than Garmin's for outdoor usage, especially if this new course point functionality works well.

However when a course is synced from Strava the toggle to sync TBT is turned on in Garmin Connect for every Strava generated course and it is disabled, meaning that it is impossible to turn it off. Why Garmin has done that - no idea! Basically it doesn't allow any changes to be made to the course because it is synced from Strava.

Garmin should either fix that issue with allowing the TBT toggle to be turned on or off for any course or to increase the course point limit on Fenix.

I did tthe same now in 2025, but as easy to add a course poibnt (=waypoint) it is as hard to figure out how to check the already added  course points in GC.
