Intensity Minutes Calculation Grossly different and incorrect for two walks

I'm using a 7X, with firmware on 7.35, hesitant to update to a beta build given that Garmin's public releases are often more like beta's as it is.

Just did two walks - a roundtrip with a stop in between.

Going there, I walked very fast, my HR was in Zone 1 about 8 min, Zone 2 about 8 min, and less than a minute in zone 3.

Intensity minutes showed 11 minutes moderate, 4 min vigorous.

Going back on the return trip I walked at a fairly leisurely pace.  I only made it into Zone 1 for about 6 minutes, less than a minute in Zone 2.  Yet Garmin put the entire 22 min in moderate for intensity minutes.  This makes zero sense and is completely different than the earlier walk.  See screenshots below showing HR during the two walks.

Two things are apparent - the HR zones shown on Garmin connect are not the ones being used for the Intensity Minutes calculation.  How this makes sense is beyond me.  This inconsistent and undocumented used of different zones is a bigger problem.

On top of that, even between two different walks, the calculations are different- How can the second walk have produced more Intensity Minutes than the first one?  Regardless of what zones GC is using, this is clearly wrong.

In summary - two problems:

1) GC calculates more Int Minutes for easy walk than for identical walk at rapid pace

2) HR Zones shown on GC are not the zones being used for that calculation

First Walk 11 min moderate, 4 min vigorous

Return Walk

  • If I understand it right, you have to be at least 10min in moderate or intensity HR zone to count intensity minutes. Your second walk was to short.

Intensity minutes setting could be automatically or you can define HR zones for moderate and intensity minutes manually. What is your setting?

You don't have to start an activity to count intensity minutes. Maybe you have moved between your two walk aktivities and that minutes was calculated as moderate intensity minutes.

  • Right - but GC shows Intensity Minutes for each activity specifically, in the Stats tab of the activity - so those were calculated for each activity.  I checked - it turned out that I had the option set to the automatic calculation rather than using my chosen zones - so that explains why the results didn't match time in zone.  but it still doesn't explain why a leisurely walk that barely registered any increase in HR would result in 22 min of moderate Intensity Minutes .  There is no way that second walk should have qualified for that purpose.  And if it did, then the first walk should have been even higher.  Something is just not right with these calculations.
