GPX Import using Garmin Connect on Android phone

Hi!

7.35 and 8.14 both have the same issues regarding GPX file import, but I suspect the real culprit is Garmin Connect on Android.

Anyway, I've exported a number of routes from Garmin Basecamp, opened them on my phone, using Garmin Connect. They all have the same name, todays date, not the name from Garmin Basecamp. Not helpful :(

Sending them to the Fenix 7X, results in only the last one to survive, assuming its because they end up having the same name in Garmin Connect.

Also, exported all 5x routes as a single GPX from Basecamp. Garmin Connect only imports one of them when I open the GPX on the phone. Again, not helpful.

it does not look like Garmin Connect, or the Fenix 7X support the Garmin extensions for routing. Within Basecamp, a Garmin product, I've used the Hiking profile and it creates a nice route, extrapolating from the main waypoints to create a route, following paths and tracks etc. That nice route ends up with only the main 4-5 waypoints I used to create the outlay after importing to Garmin Connect and the Fenix.

Would be nice if all Garmin products supported the Garmin extensions. The rather horrible workaround is to convert the Route to a Track, and then to a Route within Basecamp, before exporting. Given the problems listed above, its easy to miss this and end up with a GPX file with lots of very straight lines that don't follow the tracks on the map.

Please can this be fixed, or let me know what I am doing wrong?

  • Im not sure, if Basecamp is still in garmins current software environment. Its a pretty old software, imho. I use komoot for your use case, to create a hiking route with some waypoints. And komoot and garmin are perfectly syncable, so theres no problems on that point.
Did you try to import the GPX files into the connect web page? This would be my first try, to eliminate the android phone in between. Normaly should connect recognize a gpx file and transform it into a route suitable for navigation.

  • Hi!

    a) Basecamp is very much still a live Garmin product. Using Garmin products end to end means Garmin can't blame a 3rd party product for the import problem.

    b) Connect online (web) imports them with the same name as well, but it does push 5x files to Garmin Express, all with same name. After sync'ing, only a single course is visible on the Fenix.
