Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire (Power Sapphire)

Hi everyone !

I'll get soon the Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire (Power Sapphire), while reading reviews and reddit posts I realized that Solar & Sapphire (the so called power sapphire) may not go well together.

I mean..people are complaining the display gets easily scretched, somebody wonders who since they didn't even use it then some people think these are "cracks" not scratches, probably due to glass pressures or else....

Where's the truth ? Any owner can confirm or reject this ?

Thanks!

  • I've never seen these reports and personally I haven't had any of these issues, my 7X Sapphire seems like the same sapphire my 6X had, and hasn't scratched even after banging it into a number of things accidentally over the last few months.

The cracks / "glass pressures" comments sound like people who have no idea what they're talking about

  • The Power Sapphire was first used on the tactix Delta Solar. I've been daily wearing the tactix solar since it came out, and now wearing the 7X SS, and I haven't noticed any difference at all between these two watches and my old 5X sapphire. Sapphire is more brittle than glass, but that goes for all sapphire crystals, not just Power Sapphire. If it does scratch it's probably a manufacturing defect and would very likely be covered by Garmin anyway. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Thanks for your answers!

As additional elements, I own already a Fenix 6 Sapphire and happy with it so..we'll see..

What I fear a bit more (and forgot to mention) is that my 7SS will be the Chestnut version that apparently is not DLC (the bezel) rather pure titanium, I love the color but people say the bezel can scratch easily as well.

That might be true, though I can't speak to that personally. So far I've had excellent luck with my DLC coated watches, both the Stainless 6X and the Titanium 7X (though I was very worried about the titanium for a while, since it is softer than stainless, but ultimately it seems plenty durable so far).

Without DLC coating, though, I'm not sure how well the bare titanium resists scratching, but I suspect you're correct that it likely does scratch a bit easier than stainless or titanium with DLC coating.

That said, I've also been told that the bare titanium doesn't show scratches as bad, since the scratch will be the same color as the surface color. So even if it does scratch easier, you may not notice or care. Whereas DLC coating, while better at resisting scratches, if it somehow does scratch then it'll be a lot more noticeable.
