Heart rate zones set to based on BPM, but all of a sudden it changes to %Max. HR - is this a bug?

As the subject says...In both my F7x SS (7.35) and phone under I have the following: Heart Rate > Zones > Based on BPM & the same for sport heart rate - running. However, when I checked this setting on my watch before my run today (and also in other previous occasions) the setting was different: Heart Rate > Zones > Based on %Max. HR. I'm sure I did not play with this and for sure it was set to BPM. Is there anyone else who experienced the same? If not then can someone please check this and report back? Thanks.

Make sure it's set the same on your watch, Garmin Connect Mobile and in Garmin Connect for your computer.  Then sync. I had this happen to me a while back and I believe the website settings take precedence over the mobile app and watch. If they're all the same and the problem is still there, you might want to contact support.

  • Thanks for trying to help, but as per the info on the support site, "Garmin watches that support the Real Time Settings feature are only able to change settings on the Garmin Connect app, or in the watch menu.".

Unless I missed something, there's no option in GC web, computer as you called it, to set HR zones.

  • Yes, I checked it yesterday on the website: there's no way to change these settings on the website. I only get the message to change it in the app or watch.

  • I've noticed this behavior too and it's really confusing. But, here's the thing...I don't think it's actually changing the settings unless you, you know, change them. When you get to the screen that says %Max HR, if you back out without changing anything and then go for an activity, it will work with your previously input custom zones as it did before. If you are at that screen and then choose BMP again, it should show your your custom zone settings as you input them earlier. At least that's what I it does on mine.

It's confusing and probably needs to be fixed from a UI perspective, but on the data side, it seems to work as intended.

  • Thanks for the input. Indeed, %Max HR zones are equivalent to the zones based on BPM, but still this is confusing. I have the default HR zones and under Sport HR I also set up for running. I checked them minutes ago and the default got mysteriously changed from BPM to %Max HR while for running remained on BPM.

  • Note that Heart Rate > Max. HR > Auto Detection and Heart Rate LTHR > Auto Detection settings when on will allow the watch to adjust your zones on its own. You are supposed to get an alert to confirm the change but I have accidentally agreed and I have training partners who swear the watch has changed its zones on its own even when declining the update. These Auto Detection features are on by default. I turn them off because I am using zones from Training Peaks and I don't want dueling zone settings.

  • Yes my fenix 7 does exactly the same . Just want to set my zones and leave them . Zones keep changing every run. I have now set zones to BPM and turned auto detects off. Also must remember zones are still set to BPM b4 each run . Hopefully this is a software issue Garmin can rectify .
