Where can I find the software update policy?

For a lot of device ecosystems, for example, phones or smart watches, the manufacturer releases the software update policy. There's often a time frame for feature updates, and a time frame for security updates.

Does anyone know where Garmin has this for the Fenix 7 series?  Is there a commitment for how long I can expect security updates/fixes in particular?

Does anyone know if paying extra money for a tactix comes with a longer update policy because of.gov customer base?

  • There is no policy that I’m aware of. Indeed I’ve never seen such a policy from anyone. Where is Apple’s, Samsung’s etc?
Find any assurances you need by looking back at earlier models. Simply put, new features and updates continue to be added for quite a few years after release.

  • Garmin doesn't have a "Patch Tuesday" for their watches though the Garmin Connect mobile app seems to follow a monthly cadence.  That being said, they won't leave you high and dry.

I do try to submit practical feature requests through their Feedback page here https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

For example, if I use a Training Suggestion for Run/Trail Run/Treadmill Activities, temporarily disable Auto Scroll if it is on because starting a Training Suggestion pulls up an additional Data Screen specifically for them.  Say, it wants me to keep up a running speed for so long it'll show a gauge and how fast I'm going to show if I'm running too fast/slow/just right along with a timer for the duration of that interval.  I don't want it scrolling through all of the other Data Screens I normally like to see if I'm trying to stick with the pace it wants me at.  During Training Suggestions I'm practically staring at my watch a ton more because the pace is so sensitive and constantly fluctuates.

But I'd message them directly to see if they actually have an official policy

  • There aren’t a whole lot of security fixes, and those that have been released have all AFAIK related to the ConnectIQ VM.

That said, the Fenix 3 got a CIQ security patch 5 years after release, and the Fenix 5 series got bug fixes a month ago, again 5 years from release. Don’t expect a lot of new features after the next generation is released, and don’t expect all of its new features to be backported.
