Fenix 7 incorrectly adding total height above sea level to altitude gain

Hi

My new Fenix 7 records altitude gain in an activity as total height above sea level, ASL. If I start at 500m and climb to 700m then it records altitude gain as 700m, not 200m.

The altimeter/barometer works perfectly and gives correct heights against known spot heights so it is not a hardware problem.

My altitude graphs are also correct and would show, in the above example, a climb starting and 500m and finishing at 700m, but still give an altitude gain as 700m although it knows I've only climbed 200m

So the watch knows what height it is at but the altitude "gain" on the watch activity face and summary always adds the height ASL in addition to the actual height gained. If I start an activity at 200m ASL then it adds 200m to the actual height gained.

This has happened with a hike and ski tour.

I am hoping there is a simple settings fix and would be grateful for ideas.

Alan

  • Certainly not seeing this in other activity types.  it would be helpful to see a screenshot of your elevation profile.  Just to clarify, the parameter calculated is not elevation gain but total ascent which is different.  Sorry if this is obvious but your post implies you expect to see the difference between the start and end elevation but the calculation includes every piece of the activity that is ascending (does not include descents) so, in your example, only if the route was a smooth continuous climb would the total ascent be 200.  I just finished a fat bike ride which started and ended at 114m with a Total Ascent of 54m.  Again, not saying you are not seeing an issue on your watch (specifically with those two activities), but want to clarify.

  • Thank you very much for helpful reply. Yes the incorrect parameter is "total ascent"  not "elevation gain" as i initially posted, apologies. I accept that on an uphill climb the total ascent will almost always exceed the elevation gain due to terrain but in this case the watch has a systemic error of adding start height ASL to total ascent.

I would be very grateful for advice/link on how to post screenshot from Garmin/strava.

  • On my way back from trial run today I used "Hike" as I slowly drove up my long driveway - maybe not a very valid test but the Total Ascent once saved matched what the watch was showing during the activity and matched what I would expect.  If you are sure that your ascent was primarily up (not a bunch of ups and downs) then, in Garmin Connect on the computer try enabling "Elev Corrections" (just under the image of the watch) and see what this does.  Also you could export the GPX file and import it into other applications to see what that shows.  After that I would try a forced reset and/or a master reset if needed and then document the issue and contact support.  At this point I have not seen any other complaints of this (nor did anyone comment on your post) so it may be very isolated.  Sorry!

  • Thank you very much for replying. I have asked Garmin for help.

  • Garmin fixed this with a  software update.
