When using an electric bike, what kind of workout should I use?

I use an electric bike. I want to know which workout I choose to count on my real performance. The bike training setting is not good, probably because it reports the speed of the bike, which distorts the result.

  • You can select ebike or eMTB. However, I don't see how that will help. To be really accurate, watch needs to get data from the bike and how much assistance is provided.

  • Thank you. I found this function. I would also like to know how its algorithm works.

  • I use Cardio as my catch all activity type (snow shoveling, logging, strenuous yard work.  My heart rate is pretty much the best indicator of how hard I'm working at something.

I would imagine that eBike tracks your heart rate as well as mileage.  It's probably exactly the same as Bike but called eBike.  Mileage doesn't give you credit for effort, only your heart rate will do that.  Milage is just a way to show the distance of your workout.  Think about it for a bit, kayak, canoe, walk on a golf course, hiking.  It's about your heart, mileage just gives different statistics.  Put another way, it gives a dimension to your effort.

  • Thank You. I don’t even understand why they created an e-bike category if you don’t have any options to set it up. Or maybe the e-bike only works as a Cardio feature. If the weather gets better here, I'll give it a try. :-)

  • I have eMTB and tried such workout but didn't see difference between MTB and eMTB results.

  • I don't think there is an algorithm at work here, it's more like a collection of sensors that are on or off, and how to report that data.

For biking, the primary sensors will be the heart rate, respiration, time, altitude, and position (e.g., GPS, distance).  The style of bike, just gives granularity of the type of biking, not changing the primary sensors.  For example, you might bike 3000 miles total in a year.  500 might be ebike and 2500 might be road bike.  By selecting what style of biking, when you look at reports later in the year, you will know how much of each style of biking.

Page 22 of the manual describes how to create a custom activity, it's not complicated.  Page 104 describes data fields that may be available.  As you'll see, how the data from the basic sensors is reported is what makes up the various reports.

    Electric bike?

    Real performance?

    I don't think there is a workout for sitting...lol

  • Common misunderstanding. I reacted the same way but in reality depends how eMTB is used. If assistance is set to the highest level, you are almost right. Almost, because rider still needs to pedal, so it's better than nothing. If assistance is used as add-on on uphill when even with the lowest gear it's still too tough, then eMTB is helping to go longer and higher. And overall training is actually higher than with a regular MTB.

  • And overall training is actually higher than with a regular MTB
    • I find that hard to beleive.  But, if an ebike gets someone off the couch I wont argue (vigorously, maybe i could create an arguing activity).
