My Fenix 7 mini-review (mandatory pic included)

Hello everyone,

So I just got my Fenix 7 base model (my first Fenix ever) and here are my impressions:

Choosing between Fenix and Epix:

It was ultimately easy for me. I have returned or sold 4-5 OLED smartwatches over time due to (besides short battery life) how the OLED screen behaves on a smartwatch, my Vivoactive 4 won every comparison for 2 years. I didn't want to make that mistake again.

Having to choose between a black screen 99% of the time with an annoying, delayed raise-to-wake gesture, and something glowing on your wrist all the time which gets annoying in like 3 days, the transreflective screen is a good compromise until some better display tech is developed for smartwatches. However, OLED is not that tech in my opinion. A watch needs a passive screen, you can't have a light glowing on your wrist all the time.

If I were Garmin I would heavily invest in making passive screens better, more reflective and with higher resolution. But given how the consumers and reviewers are in awe about OLED and view it as the holy grail, I doubt this will be the case.

Choosing between base model and Sapphire:

For me it wasn't about the price. It was about design and indoor visibility. I love the stainless steel look, it's a bit flashier than the other models and I would have chosen it anyway instead of black. And since I spend most of the time indoors, I needed the best screen visibility I could get from a passive screen so sapphire would not have been ideal. I also don't like the solar charging ring, it kind of makes the design too busy and disconnected. But I love how it looks on the Enduro though.

The display: coming from a Vivoactive 4 (which I was "forced" to buy instead of Fenix 6 because I needed a touchscreen), I'm happy to report that the F7 screen brightness is identical so no worries that the display is dimmer like I have read on forums. I did check out the F7 Sapphire in a store and yes, the display is maybe a bit dimmer (like 10-20%) but it mostly looks like a different, "brown-ish" shade rather than actually being dimmer. However, I spend 80% of my time indoors so I needed as much reflectivity as possible.

Tip: use a white background. The watch may not look as cool as with black background, but the visibiliy will greatly improve indoors without backlight.

The buttons: I read some worrying things about the F7 buttons and unfortunately mine does have one button (the back button) that feels different than the other four, it's more silent and has a shorter travel. However, I noticed that if I press it at a slight angle it can start behaving like the others for some time, then it goes back to that feeling. But it does click, feels solid and I think that it isn't worth returning the watch and taking another gamble.

The functionality: This smartwatch is much more complex than the Vivoactive 4, and yet it's incredibly easy to get around the hunderds of menu items. I am very surprised now Garmin managed to make so much features, so accessible. I mostly do bodybuilding as a sport, and unfortunately any smartwatch has real issues properly tracking weight training. But I did notice improvements with the F7 over VA4: it detects rest periods much faster. However, it really over-counts the reps, I read that it learns if I do enough corrections so maybe it will improve over time. Plus, the firmware will probably improve on this too.

Conclusion: I love the Fenix 7, it does feel like an upgrade over the VA4, both design-wise and functionality-wise ! :)

  • I've been debating exchanging my Solar (non-sapphire) for the base F7 because the solar ring just sorta overpowers everything about the watch face. I might get used to it, but who knows. My hesitation on the base F7 is that I haven't been able to see one in person, and I can't get a solid idea online about how dark the non-steel portion of the casing is. My worry is that the gray color will be too light and look more plastic than the solar/sapphire watches with darker sides. What's your take on it? Does it look like a traditional, middle-of-the-road gray? Or is it darker and more of a charcoal color? Would it pair well with a black or brown leather band?

  • You do have a point here. The dark gray color (about three shades darker than the box it comes in and looks identical to the Venu 2 color if you have seen one) does have a couple of drawbacks and one advantage but in no way regarding looking cheap. The first reaction I received with the watch on my wrist was literally "wow, that looks expensive !". And it does, the stainless steel cover, the stainless steel back and buttons combine to a classy look even with the dark gray body.

However, the drawbacks that I see are:

    - It's hard to match the dark gray to some aftermarket straps if you are into them (I usually never change the default strap). Black is easier to match. I am really not sure how would it blend with black or brown but certainly not as good as black would. EDIT: Garmin actually sells that titanium with chestnut strap version which has the same dark gray body so you can kind of see how it would look. And it looks great :)

    - The watch may not look quite suited to the occasion if you dress formally. A black non-steel part would probably be better suited for this setting.

There is one advantage that I noticed: on the Fenix 6, the stainless steel was too "contrasty" to the black non-steel portion and the watch was actually a bit too "flashy". With the dark gray the contrast between the two parts is absolutely perfect and it has the right amount of "flashy-ness" without being over the top.

    Hope this helps...

  • I would really love the bright and contrast display of the base Fenix 7, but Garmin doesn't really gives me a choice because by going with the base Fenix 7 I lose multi-frequency GNSS. Also I don't think that 7X is even available without the solar layer. So, in order to have the best possible GPS accuracy I also have to have both solar and sapphire glass, both of which reduce display readability.

  • Thanks so much for the feedback. I was finally able to get my hands on a base F7 in-store today, and everything you said is pretty spot on. It's a great looking watch out of the box with its matching band. I tried it with my black leather band, though, and I unfortunately think it would bother me just as much as, if not more than, the solar ring currently bothers me. I'm pretty sure there would only be like 3 other people in the world who would ever notice it, but I don't know that I personally could get used to it (some might say I tend towards the picky side). So it looks like I'm going to learn to love the solar ring...at least until Garmin decides to give us a light and dark color bezel choice at each build level (not holding my breath). Anyway, thanks again for your help!

  • Ya...I'm pretty sure if you want the 7X, you don't even have a base level option. With that being said, I have been very, very, very happy with my GPS tracks and instant pace accuracy on my F7 Solar. I'm using all systems (obviously don't have access to multi-frequency), and the results are some of the best tracks I've ever seen. There are places that my F6 Pro couldn't even accidentally get right for 2 years, and the F7 nailed it first time out. When I zoom in on my activity map, I would say 90%+ of the tracks are exactly where I was running. And on top of that, it looks like switching to the F7 helped me finally learn how to run in a straight line (at least that's what my activity maps are now showing me). All that to say...if you want a 7X and want to avoid sapphire, you might give the 7X Solar a try. I think you'll be pleased with the satellite tracking even without multi-frequency (especially if you happen to currently be using any version of the F6).

  • Thanks but multi-frequency GNSS was pretty much the main feature I anticipated. It isn't worth upgrading without it. I am a trail runner and do regularly run on some gnarly terrain which is a combination of steep slopes and dense tree coverage. I need all the accuracy I can get. I also need all the screen readability I can get. I guess I'll wait and see. Perhaps FR 955 will have what I need.

If anyone from Garmin is reading this, do you guys understand what your customers need? How hard it is to give us more choices?

  • Good one!

My impression coming from Fenix 6 Sapphire is bit disappointing.

Solar ring is awful and messes up with data on the watch face. Readibilty vs Fenix 6 (still Sapphire) is bad. Software buggy. I'm restarting again to find fixes on forums and reddit. Bad. Spring pin can Not be removed so I can't use anymore many nylon straps. Bad. Sleep mode schedule can't be disabled, Garmin decides for me when shut down some features. Bad.... And it's only w days I got it Dizzy face
