Cannot pair Fenix 7X Sapphire to Garmin Connect (Android or iOS)

Hello,

I just received my fenix 7X Sapphire and tried to add it to Garmin Connect on Android, but right out of the box, the watch and app could not find each other.  This is with Garmin Connect (latest version downloaded from the Play Store as of February 4, 2022) on a Galaxy Z Fold 2.

I figured that the watch firmware might need some updating (it was 6.x something), so I used the charge and sync cable to try to update the software via Garmin Express on PC.  The watch was able to receive an update to 7.20, which I then installed.  However, Garmin Connect and the watch still could not find each other.

I tried the same thing on another phone (a Pixel 6) with a fresh install of Garmin Connect and the 7.20 watch firmware, but it also had the same problem - the watch and app could not find each other.

I then tried the same thing on an iPhone (a 13 Pro Max) with a fresh install of Garmin Connect and also the same watch firmware, and it also had the same problem - the watch and app could not find each other.

The unusual thing is that on Android, if I set the watch to Pairing mode, the phone is able to see the fenix 7X and make a request to pair, and the watch responds by showing a six-digit pairing code.  Pairing is successful if I enter the code on the phone, but the Garmin Connect app still can't see it.  However, when I try the same thing on iOS, the iPhone's Bluetooth scan can't see the fenix 7X when it is in pairing mode.

Is anyone else having issues pairing their fenix 7X (or 7 series) to Garmin Connect?  This is a very frustrating issue to have with such an expensive watch!

  • I had much trouble to connect to my Android tablet. I tried about everything. Uninstalled and reinstalled the App on the tablet as well as reset hard reset the watch several times.
I was almost giving up when I found, by accident, an IQ square picture on the watch screen - sorry I don't remember how I found that - I did scan the watch screen IQ with the camera of my tablet and YES after that following the following steps all worked fine.

  • Did you get it to connect? I'm having the same problem bit watch is a over a year old. When I did an up date on my watch it stopped connecting to my phone. I've done everything thing you did without getting it to work!

  • I solved it with the same issue up in the thread. It was the region - my SW was set to Canada but I bought the device in Japan. Once they matched, it worked.

  • OK, just brought a Fenix 7x Sapphire Solar home and my issue was a little different. I had to go the Garmin Express route to initially update the firmware (13.8 now I think?) and several maps. After I did that, as when it came out of the box, Garmin Connect Mobile on my Pixel 6 Pro could find the phone and it was added to Garmin Connect on the web, but no matter how many times I tried rebooting the app, phone and watch, it could never generate a pairing code on the phone. My account location was Canada, and I'm not sure whether my Fenix is an international version or not, but I followed these steps, changing my location to UK in both my Garmin account and on the app and the next time I tried after logging into Garmin Connect and confirming I wanted to keep my existing data, it paired perfectly.

So, two questions. If I just leave my location as UK (even though I'll always be based in western Canada) will it screw anything up? Now that it has paired and done an initial sync, I don't really want to change anything back and bork the connection.

This is a seriously stupid workaround, particularly as my mobile app could see my new Fenix and just not pair to sync initially.

  • I solved my issues, my device was already saved on my phones blue tooth, I needed to forget it and then it connected.

  • Thank you for your comment! You solved it for me. I actually had the problem the other way around. I bought the device in Japan and set my account Location to my home country. It did not work without any message but paired with my phone manually and via the computer. The location change to Japan fixed the issue, after that it was immediately detected

  • exactly same solution location on the connect mobile account was different to that of where watch was bought  , followed by restart on my mobile and it found the phone before i had to touch anything.... so many times i have been round this loop with garmin and nothing from support ot anywhere in the manuals / support
