Sleep tracking on Fenix 7, what are your first impressions?

I wonder how do you like sleep tracking on new Fenix 7 and how does it compare to Fenix 6 if you used it.

For anyone who missed, here is also a review of a sleep tracking on the device: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ka9LXKQy-fQ too bad he never reviewed how it worked on Fenix 6.

  • Mine seems worse than my 5X plus. Sleep start and end times are good but the stages are whack. Rarely get any REM and says I’m awake a various times throughout the night yet I don’t recall waking up. Partner says the same.

  • Seems to be the same as for the 6s for me. Start and end times are correct, but for some reason sometime in the middle of the day Connect shifts the wakeup time to the back, probably because I don't immediately jump out of bed once I've woken up. :(
Good? Bad? Not sure... works better than Fitbit for me as it at least recognizes wakeup times in the night properly. The rest is likely moot, but if I get very little deep sleep I know my day won't be good.

  • Mine seems the same as the fenox 6 to be honest. In my experience, Garmin does a poor job of capturing my deep sleep. Could be my physiology for sure but by Garmin's count, I should be dead LOL.

Joking aside, what people seem to miss is that these watches do an incredible amount- it really is mind blowing! In some areas, like wrist based heart rate, Garmin is doing very well with my exercises- better than the fenix 6. The 6 I always had HR spikes in my workouts, this has not happened yet with the 7. In others like sleep, it doesn't hit all of the marks all of the time. That is OK. If sleep tracking is that important, then you shouldn't use a watch to track it.

    Just my thoughts.

  • Thanks for the feedback, guys!

If I'm not wrong 5X never got Fitbit algorithm and analyzed sleep on Garmin servers only, right? If so I'm surprised that it's performing better, because at least in my case with Vivosmart HR and Vivoactive 4 it was a total mess especially that I have irregular sleep cycles and I used to correct the time every morning based on other sources.

My 6Pro seems to catch awake time nicely, I can't say for sleep stages, but I also saw correlation in lack of deep sleep and feeling badly so maybe Garmin's estimation actually works to some extent.

it must be good to be alive against all odds ;)

The 6 I always had HR spikes in my workouts, this has not happened yet with the 7.

it's good to hear they improved in this department as after some comparison and testing I can only trust to my HR data when using a chest strap, other times it seems to be off especially during low intensity workouts(yeah I know, most of the reviews out there tell otherwise but at least for me, it seems to be way off when I'm walking but relatively accurate when running).

In others like sleep, it doesn't hit all of the marks all of the time. That is OK. If sleep tracking is that important, then you shouldn't use a watch to track it.

Of course, I understand limitation of technology and that the watch isn't a medical grade instrument for tracking sleep, but I'm using that data for being more mindful about it and what influence it, so as long as it tracks awake time well I'm fine with that.

  • Only one persons opinion, but not great according to this review

  • yeah, in fact I've posted the same URL in my original post:) I'm subscribed to this guy and watch his reviews so when I saw this one I thought to check with real world users to see what they think about new Fenix

  • lol, so you did, I didn’t see that tbh, I think I read your first line and immediately thought of this review I saw and went and got it.

  • haha, that's fine, I was surprised by his review as Fenix 6 seems to work great comparing to anything else I've tried(okay maybe with exception to SleepAsAndroid getting data from Amazfit Bip). His reviews are fun but unfortunately he's the only subject for testing, I wish there were some large scale testing available but that's what we have so far.

  • While it is early days for me with the 7 so far it has been better at identifying sleep stages, particulally my awake times. I know the 6 used to miss them regularly.
