The review from The Quantified Scientist is out for the Fenix 7 (Youtube)

The model he tested is a Fenix 7 (non Sapphire), so the GPS part (as he mentioned) should be taken with a grain of salt.

The HR sensor though is identical.
TLDR: poor sleep analysis, average HR monitoring for indoor/outdoor activities, below average taking the price into account.

There are comparisons with the AW 7 which is miles better on HR measurements.

I do hope they don't screw up with the rumoured rugged watch at Cupertino this fall.

  • Yes this went completely off course (as with most of the things nowadays given social media power and information consumed). At the end no Garmin no Apple cares about you, they just care to make more profit. It is up to you to decide (if and to whom) will your money end. Personally I don't give a damn bout my sleeping stages and I got the F7XSS for the 'training' part of the watch (free training plans, great gps accuracy, top of the line navigation, software support and my very pleasant experience from garmin service).

I own everything Apple but the AW is not for me. I do not need another smaller mobile on my hand. Sorry but to charge a watch every day or every second day its ridiculous (IMHO). Why would I care for sleep tracking if in the middle of the night the watch may die, or go on a multi-day hiking in the mountains and carry chargers.

Fenix's main audience are not smartwatch enthusiasts and it never was. As AW was never aimed at the outdoor enthusiast. So pick what suits you best and do not expect (at least for now) that single device can do it all perfectly well.

Keep safe and healthy, less stress about meaningless stuff :)

  • I will have a lot of stress and difficulty falling asleep after this post... Hope my Garmin can pick this up.....

Sorry, did not resist the joke, but seriously... I do agree, while still find fun to look at these analyses... In the end... It's just for fun

  • Feel free to parrot pseudo science but science in peer reviewed publications suggest that sleep trackers can really only determine start and end. It matters little which is best or worst if the reality is that none of them produce anything really meaningful for instance.

I admit I have not looked at the YouTube video but perhaps you could elaborate a bit more on the comparator that was used to create the pretty graph and the journal in which the study was published.

    EDIT and apology.

Firstly, I'd like to unequivocally apologise to 'The Quantified Scientist' for any offense I might have cause by calling his reviews 'pseudo science' and inadvertently calling into question his scientific standing. It is clear that his analysis has scientific basis even if it has not been peer reviewed.

However, while the F7 is low down in the graph, there is nothing there to suggest that any of the devices offer much even at 60% 'accuracy', which is still pretty poor. That supports the consensus in peer reviewed studies that the tracking of sleep phases has little value.

So, while I unequivocally apologise to 'The Quantified Scientist' I stand by my comment that sleep phase tracking is all but pointless on any watch. However, for detecting the beginning and ending of sleep the F7 is just as good as my F6.

  • Kudos to you my friend for acknowledging your mistakes. Surely the world would be a better place if all people acted this way. Stay safe and may the the force be with you :)

  • What a nice post to read!

I am answering since I was one yelling at you to at least watch the video before giving such harsh comments, and as I see it you did! Nice of you coming back with this edit

Regarding the topic, honestly your opinion is completely legit, surely these toys are not fully ready for such complex analysis, though there is better or worst ones, and in general they seem to be able to give an idea of how the night went.

Additionally, personally I do prefer the idea of having even a rough and veeeery approximate record than none, And like the idea of Garmin (as all other manufacturers) working on it for getting better in time. Hope my Fenix 6 will - or possibly I will have to wait for Fenix 19 Smiley well see
