No more skin burn from HR sensor!

Glad to see Garmin changed the HR sensor cover from plastic to glass, this has totally resolved the skin burn issues I had to carefully manage with my 6X.

For those unaware, some users suffered contact dermatitis from the plastic HR sensor in the 6 (and 5) series. The small change to glass should hopefully be the end of this problem. Hopefully Garmin roll this out to their other devices as it wasn't just Fenix users affected.

  • I found with the 5 how much the optical sensor stuck out was the worst thing. Material was OK though. The 6 I definitely got irritation from the plastic covering the optical sensors unless it was worn stupidly loose (more so than any other activity tracker I had worn in the past).

Glad to hear this. Would love to get my metal band back to not being stupidly loose. Back to being good enough for activities without having to have a second band for activities or wearing a chest strap.

  • I pointed someone else to this thread and they said that since having their Epix 2 they haven't had the same issue they did with their 6X

Well if this is true that would be a major advantage. I think about returning my 7s because of non removable pins and really bad readability (glare/reflections). Also besides that I love the 7s. I also do suffer from occasional red rash on the spot where the sensor is, but it happens to me from all Garmin watches till now. Maybe I should try the 7s again for a longer time. I already did try it but then put away because of return. Haven't had any rash but that doesn't happen all the time on other watches either.

  • I still have had a reaction to the 7X sapphire sensor but I'm hoping it was a residual chemical from manufacture. It was actually worse than the 6X! I have scrubbed the sensor and will try again.

  • Could it be the nickel in the stainless steel in the watch 'bottom plate', that causes your rashes? Did you try the Saffire version with the titanium 'bottom plate'? I am curious, because my mum suffers a nickel allergy and therefore is not able to wear a standard version Apple Watch because of the nickel near the sensor. With the AW also the more expensive versions don't have this problem, I read on forums.

  • We are sorry to hear about the issue you are reporting. The skin irritation may be a result of build-up on the watch band and/or casing. You should discontinue wearing your watch until your skin has healed.
