The Up Ahead feature is great, but it has a big problem

Today I used the Up Ahead feature during a hike I had planned, then inserting generic points into Garmin Connect.

While navigating the route they are all precisely marked, but the problem is that for some it marked double the distance.

This is because the path was the same to follow for both the start and return journeys.

It would be nice to have the possibility of having the distance from these points in both situations, because you do not always follow circular routes.

  • I add my course points in GC web (it's easier than doing on the mobile).

Adding Course points in GC (web or app) has one major issue is that it cant handle out and back courses correctly.

Consider a situation where you have a race on a course some parts of it go out and back on the same trail with the same aid stations being used twice. That is impossible to configure in GC - I know I've tried that.

And races like that are fairly common. I'll have one like that in a month.

I am pretty sure engineers at Garmin who implemented this feature haven't even though about a usage scenario like that.

  • I see... there's a tedious workaround for that.

You create the track with the out portion and set all course points there.

Then you click on the Out and Back and GC will draw the course back.

There will be 2 tracks one on top of each other. The top track is your out portion (which already have all your course points set).

So you have to manually use the freehand tool and put 2 anchor points and drag the track slightly out of the course and put a course point on the track that you see under the track you've just dragged out.

I had to do it once in a race where I had that exact same scenario and had the same aid stations.

I'm not sure I'm being clear here.

    Edit:

Actually I just tried with a sample track.

I draw the out portion and set the course points.

Then I click on the out and back and when I put the course points, it's actually assigning them in the back portion.

    Give it a try.

  • Not entire course can be out and back, just parts of it. Also it may not be possible to edit the course after adding some course points or that may be too tedious. I understand that there are workarounds but the point is that Garmin has made it much more difficult than it should be because it doesn't understand how some of the users intend to use the feature. With the current implementation I have draw an entire course in Garmin Connect from scratch if I want to have multiple course points in the same place.

I feel a dejavu because I had exactly the same discussion on Suunto forum a couple of years ago. Suunto first made exactly the same mistake but after the feedback they had actually fixed the problem allowing the same course point to apply to multiple distances on a course. Too bad Garmin didn't bother to look at how this feature is implemented by competitors.

  • I have had this same issue. The fix is annoying but simple.  If all the third party points at least show up in garmin connect, all you have to do is edit each point and save it (i edit name or change the generic icon to checkpoint). If you do this, they will show up in the "up ahead" feature. I make route and way points on gpx studio (leave icon field blank in gpx studio)  then upload in garmin connect. All way points show up and I just individually edit/change each waypoint. Quick and easy.
