The Up Ahead feature is great, but it has a big problem

Today I used the Up Ahead feature during a hike I had planned, then inserting generic points into Garmin Connect.

While navigating the route they are all precisely marked, but the problem is that for some it marked double the distance.

This is because the path was the same to follow for both the start and return journeys.

It would be nice to have the possibility of having the distance from these points in both situations, because you do not always follow circular routes.

  • So yesterday I used a course which was created in Strava which had a few course points inserted by Strava for segment start and end points.

Those course points are recognized by Garmin. They are showing up on the map in Garmin Connect. They also triggered a notification when I ran through them on the watch. However those course points didn't show in the Up Ahead screen. In fact there was no Up Ahead screen at all. I double checked that the screen is in fact enabled.

I tried creating a test course in Garmin Connect app and inserting a few course points and those did show up in the Up Ahead screen.

So basically Up Ahead seems to be very picky at what course points it displays.

I have a race coming up and wanted to use this feature. Has anyone managed creating course points in a 3rd party course editor that show up in Up Ahead?

  • I created the points and in the fenix 7 the missing kilometers did not appear

  • There is only one way I can get course points to work on the Up Ahead.  Whether using Garmin Connect, or a third party app, the course must be copied using the Garmin website, and then uploaded to the watch from a pc using a cable connection.
I have worked on this extensively trying various combinations.  I reported to Garmin several weeks ago but they have not responded other than they will look into it.

  • the course must be copied using the Garmin website, and then uploaded to the watch from a pc using a cable connection

I use a third party website (plotaroute.com) and do not go through Garmin website and I'm on Android, so I use gexporter/gimporter ciq to wirelessly download to watch from phone.

  • I should have specified I have an iPhone.  I can wirelessly upload a course and the course points will even appear on the watch map, but the Up Ahead screen gives 0 distance to all course points (except the end point).

  • The same thing happens to me, it doesn't show the kilometers

  • Where do you create your routes/courses and how do you move the files to the watch?

  • In my case, as I said, there is only 1 method that works.   Use a third party app to import a route to Garmin Connect and then copy that route in Garmin Connect Web, or create a route in Garmin Connect Web, then import to the watch from Garmin Connect Web using a cable connection to my laptop.  Again this is only to get Up Ahead to work.  I can upload routes wirelessly for start to end navigation no problem.

  • There is no need to go through GC web or mobile.

Create a course with any web app that supports course_points. It can be Plotaroute etc or even Garmin Connect Web than save that file as .fit.

Now just copy that file to the folder Garmin/NewFiles of your device.

    regards.

  • I use Plotaroute to generate .gpx files.  Also any .gpx file copied over (Alltrails etc) seems to work so far.
