The Up Ahead feature is great, but it has a big problem

Today I used the Up Ahead feature during a hike I had planned, then inserting generic points into Garmin Connect.

While navigating the route they are all precisely marked, but the problem is that for some it marked double the distance.

This is because the path was the same to follow for both the start and return journeys.

It would be nice to have the possibility of having the distance from these points in both situations, because you do not always follow circular routes.

  • This question is not related to your problem, but I am curious if you uploaded your course over WiFi?  I cannot get up ahead to work on my watch unless I create the route on the website and upload via cable from a pc.

  • I was wondering which steps are needed to use this feature?

Last Sunday I upload a gpx to GC then editted it in the app to add some waterpoints. Then synced to my fenix 7x.

Now comes the question.. do I need to configure specific data fields or screens?

Thanks for helping me out. ( I hope it's not necessary to edit the route/GPX in the web version of Garmin Connect..?)

  • marked double the distance.

This is because the path was the same to follow for both the start and return journeys.

Exact doubling of the distance does not make sense, that's right (unless it happens to be exactly like that).
    Are you sure?
Otherwise it is logical if you pass the same POI on the way back that the POI is present twice, but the distance is increased by the correspondingly longer path.
I do not have a fenix 7 yet, so I can not check it unfortunately.

    • Once you load a course with course points, an Up Ahead data screen is added to the activity. (If not go to Settings / Navigation / Data Screens and toggle Up Ahead to On).
    • I would like to know if you get this to work directly from the GC app.  I see the course points correctly in the watch map, but the distances all show as 0 in the Up Head.  For some reason the point location data is changed to the course start location.
  • I don't know how helpful this is, but what I usually do for "out and back" courses is I only make the course for the "out" portion. Then when I get to the end, I load the course again and use the "Do course in reverse" option.

  • Just checked, my up ahead DC is on already.

However I started the route last Sunday via the trail run Activity , then did go to courses and selected the gpx.

Is the up ahead functionally only showing up when you go to activities, navigation and then select the course?

  • Yes. The Up Ahead screen only shows if you have selected a course to follow.

  • This I understand. The question is does it also show up if you first select trail running or hiking and the select the course.

  • This morning i updated to 7.24 and i just tried again:

-Created a GPX on the website afstandmeten.nl
    - shared it via whatsapp to my phone
    - imported it via Garmin Connect
    - Saved the route
    - Editted the route added some aid points / water posts
    - Synced it to my watch.

When i start the trailrun activity and select the course, the up ahead screen is immediately there :)
