Directional arrows

Please Garmin add the directional arrows to the Garmin Fenix mapping, with a gpx track.

I’ve been waiting for this feature since my first Gadmin GPS, an Oregon 450.

also apparently you implemented this option on your Edge series:

I‘Ve got a Fenix 6 Pro which I really like. I don’t really need a Fenix 7, but if you were implementing such directional arrows, I’d consider strongly upgrading to the 7!

Ah, and your competitor does it very well:

  • On my F6xPS I see it, too.

But as said before: if you start the course, it is gone and not visible anymore.

  • Good to know. It’s still not super useful though…

maybe the best would be 2 arrows in front of your current position, at the same distance as the current zoom scale. So if your zoom is 100m, you’d get an arrow 100m in front of you, and a second one 200m.

or a different color for the track on the few tens of meters in front of your current position.

That is exactly how Suunto shows directional arrows, and that works really well. Not only that shows direction right in front of your position, but, if there multiple possible ways, it clearly indicates the planned way. That is much better than showing the arrows on the entire course, which would be still confusing if there are multiple different loops or an out-and-back section.

Garmin should just copy Suunto's design. That would be ideal!

  • I have just watched  955 review and it has directional arrows ...

  • The way Garmin implemented directional arrows in 955 is kind of ugly for two reasons.

    1) It shows arrows for the entire route, which makes it confusing if the route includes multiple loops taking different paths or a two directional path (e. g. out and back course).

    2) These arrows make the map busy, harder to see other details.

For the navigation purposes it would be sufficient to see just a couple of arrows right in front of the current position or on the part of the course closest to the current position - the way it was implemented by Suunto.

Still, that is better than nothing, and I hope Garmin ports that to Fenix.

I agree 100% on both points.

Just goes to show how sometimes less is more, and good UX trumps adding a feature for the sake of checking of a box.

I agree that it's better than nothing.

  • Interestingly my Fenix 7 has started showing directional arrows on routes. I don’t know when it started or what caused the change but I noticed it the other day while out on a run. I’ll try and take a picture next time.

  • Ya it should really just have direction arrows for the next maybe 0.25mi/0.5km or something like that. Otherwise it makes it confusing for out-and-back type tracks where you do the same path twice in opposite directions. You'd have arrows pointing forward and backward.

Even just a single directional arrow a little ahead of the current position would be good enough for me, I don't need lots of arrows, really I just need to know which direction the track goes just up ahead of where I am currently.

In any case, I'm also hopeful that this gets added soon, it's much needed for those of us who occasionally use complex courses involving lots of crossovers and backtracking.

  • I love the navigation on the fenix 6 pro but the lack of arrows is a shame. It's still not implemented on the fenix 6. There are some arrows but they're too spaced out.

To tell where the route wants to take me, I need to zoom out a lot or wait a long time for the gray arrow to move.

I this case, the route direction is clockwise. Impossible to tell from the screen/ gray arrow hidden below my own position arrow.

  • That gray arrow isn't a directional arrow. It is more of a virtual racer thing. It shows where your position would be if you moved with the target pace. There are situations when it may be pointing in the opposite direction on an out-and-back course. I've seen that.
