Replying to a message

Is it possible to reply to a message using the T9 keyboard? It's too bad the Fenix 7 doesn't have a voice assistant like the Venu 2 Plus, but a keyboard would be enough to reply, especially since we now have a touchscreen available.

  • Not currently. I just tried it, it only lets me pick from my list of preset messages.

  • Thanks for the reply. I would like to see something like this, I will even write to Garmin with such a suggestion. I've had the situation many times where I needed to write back from the watch, and I couldn't communicate any meaningful point using the predefined responses.

  • I second this.

The keyboard and touchscreen are already there.

Shouldn't be too hard for Garmin to add reply to text with the keyboard.

  • I'm sure it's not difficult to implement. Unfortunately when I look at how Garmin works they would sooner introduce this in a new model than add it to the current one. I hope I'm wrong.

  • I agree it would be a useful feature, I am surprised they havent yet increased the number of presets, it is the same as my 645M, 3 is it for rejecting calls?

  • I don't know how much it is on the Fenix 7, but I also have 3 responses for calls on the Forerunner 245. I all the time very fondly remember the Pebble Time, which had simple Voice to Text. There was no assistant there, and they used Nuance translation. It was awesome because you could choose predefined answers, or Voice to Text. I understand, of course, that with the Fenix, the hurdle might be to keep the water resistance at the right level. However, this response option seems best to me because we can say whatever we want and it doesn't require us to do more than the usual predefined responses.

  • I would like this function too. For short replyes it would be gread. I hope that there is not HW limited, and that will comes in future updates. Same as change background color in entire watch

  • Hardware limitation to keyboard responses? I think the limitation might just be software in this case and it's only up to Garmin to decide if we get such a feature. I have written to Garmin many times with my "ideas" via their form. Unfortunately I can't say I'm satisfied because they neither implemented nor wrote anything back to my suggestions. I don't own a Fenix 7 yet, but I also think it would be possible to write a CIQ app that would allow you to view recent messages and reply to them in the way the developer of that app came up with. It wouldn't be as convenient as the built-in solution, but it's always a solution. There is currently an app in the CIQ store called Text Chatter, but it requires additional Tasker and Autonotification configuration.

  • It's definitely not due to any sort of technical limitation - the fact that we know the watch can 1) provide us with a touchscreen keyboard and 2) send preset text messages, means that all the required technology is there and the major technical hurdles have already been overcome, it just hasn't been implemented yet. I'm almost positive a future update will allow this function, since it would be fairly easy to implement by simply combining already-existing functions together.

  • I suggested a feature enhancement to Garmin to be able to reply to messages using the built in touchscreen keyboard:
