Plan a hike on Garmin connect Mobile

Hi,

Do you know if it is possible now to create a hike (not an automatic one) but with start, end and different points ont he mobile app instead of on the WEB ? Otherwise, what are you using to plan a route on your watch without you computer ?

Thanks

  • The capability to create a custom course with Course Points on the GC App has existed for some time now.  The recent GC App now has many more Course Points to select from.  The only thing that might throw you, is that there is not a Hike course type to select from.  You can just use the "Other" course type and change the course type later GC web.

  • I think GC is rather useless for planning a hike because you only have Google maps available, which does not show you any trails.

You can try Garmin Explore if you want to stay with Garmin.

I use Locus map with Garmin addon. The paid versions have more features, but planning a course and sending to the watch works also on the free version of app and addon.

Maybe the CIQ app still needs to be updated for the F7 though.

  • Really it is now possible to plan a route on the GC mobile App ! That's good news ! I will check when receiving my watch. 2 years ago it was a missing function and I was using Koomot but it was a little complicated.

On Google Maps, we cannot plan and export a route to the watch no ?

  • I organize and guide mountain tours and use Outdooractive. Outdooractive has the advantage that you can buy, for example, very good slope layers (important in winter because of avalanches). There is also a 3D view from the air for money.

In the free version you can only use OSM maps, but this is sufficient, in my eyes it is a very good tool for mountain tour planning, with which even advanced users will be happy.

Garminspecific functions are of course not supported.

    Here is an example: www.alpenvereinaktiv.com/.../I7Ausc

You can plan in Web or App, i usually plan on Computer, export GPX and put the gpx-file in "NewFiles" Folder in the watch. But its also possible in the app but sometimes a little but difficult to get the gpx imported into GC to send it to the watch.

  • I use Plotaroute.com to make my routes. They have Garmin integration, so when you save a course on their site, it'll sync it to your Connect account automatically (I think you have to pay for a subscription for that function, which I do), and then it'll automatically get loaded it onto your watch next time you sync your watch. Pretty seamless, and I really like their UI for making courses. Lots of different map options to pick from when you're drawing your route, too. Plus it even works pretty well on a smartphone web browser.

I still use the mobile App OsmAnd (open street map, auto routing, waypoint support, hill shades, elevation, limited slope layer) and use tooms like iqMapReceiver (Android) to share the GPX output and convert it to Fit format for upload. This way you can replan your course everywhere very fast.

  • Another thumbs up  for Plotaroute.com... : -)

  • I have been using Komoot which uses OSM.  You can plan online or on the app (I have iPhone).  It has a Garmin app which you can use to sync to your Fenix.  If I have a GPX I also upload it to the Komoot site and from there I can sync with my Fenix without having to connect via USB.  This way I can use Komoot as the library of my various hiking, biking and XC ski routes.  The iPhone app on it's own is very good and you can use it offline as a back up to your Fenix on your hikes just incase.
