Maps: It should be possible to choose single countries

Hm, i think it is a real bummer, that the memory on the normal Solar models have been cut in half. 16 GB ist not much. Especially, if the European map takes already more than 11 GB. I wish there was an option, that you could choose the countries you need. Same with North America. I don`t need the whole map of Canada and the US on my watch.

There should realy be an option in the Garmin Express Desktop App to toggle the countries on or of. If I want to install the US map. I have to remore the European app etc.

That's exactly why I get my map from bbbike for local hikes, just my region (1 of 20) in Italy, and for the most part even that is overkill. Total size is around 50MB and it's way more detailed and recently updated than Garmin one.

The whole continent? Nonsense.

On my TomTom GO app not only I can download just Italy, but it's even sliced in four pieces so that the total size is much smaller.

Or, if not individual countries (that would be 200 different maps, many of them quite tiny), it would be nice if they at least shrink the map regions down a bit. For example, why is Taiwan one map, while Noth America is another map? There's a Hong Kong map, and a Africa map. It's weird.

I suspect that they simply took their existing regional maps and made them freely available, without making any changes to them. Hopefully in the future they'll break the larger ones down into smaller chunks. For example, 99% of my activities are in the western US, so there's no value in me also having Canada, Mexico, and the Eastern US on my watch most of the time.

Just download from Openstreetmap based free sources like OpenTopoMap or Userbeam and copy to your watch. They're more up to date than Garmin's maps and have more detail.

C.sco I'm guessing Taiwan and Hong Kong are only separate for political reasons, to avoid including them in the definition of what constitutes "China".....

On my fenix 6x I have 3 maps for Europe (East, West, Central) looking at the maps setting on the watch, choosing which one of those you need would already make a huge difference, so I certainly agree that splitting the large maps would be a big plus.

If you did this, can you still create a route on the fly from your watch, for example a 10km in any direction? Or will only official Garmin maps work with that built in feature?

OpenTopoMap and Userbeam maps are routable, thus watch can calculate a route just like its own maps. Actually, it's maps are from OpenStreetMap too, but Garmin adds some extras like dem data etc...
