Does the Fenix 7s have removable spring pins?

Just purchased the 7s and looking to buy a hook strap to replace the band. I can't figure out if the watch has removable spring pins. There seems to be a bit of give to the bars, but I can't seem to remove them. I understand that the pins of the 6s were removable. Can anyone confirm if they are fixed or removable, and if the latter, let me know how to remove them?

Thanks!

  • How would you know? You have the F6 as you say, also you have removed your springbars to install it. You don't own the Nick Mankey variant for non-removable springbars, nor tried to push it through you F6 without removing the bars (because again you don't have that variant).

Also an F6 is not an X model that has a larger diameter and leaving less space at the springbars.

Also you are mentioning the Instinct about which Nick Mankey specifically said it wont fit with this model.

  • Looking at the pictures, looks like the pins of the f7 are still spring loaded kind, but miss the flanges that one would use for shrinking them out? Is that the case?

If so it may be possible, for instance using small nails scissors as a sort of very thin pliers, to convince them out?

If they are really "not removable" (like welded or glued in place or something) this would be a deal breaker for many people including myself - not that I am planning to get one any soon due to price and due to already having a quite young f6, but... Would really be a bad move from Garmin!

I only have the normal 7s and yes they are spring loaded but there is almost no space on the other side to push or press it more in. It is impossible to pull them out. I don‘t believe it is so different with 7 or 7x. Very disappointing!

  • @Frankysour By "not removable" we mean it can not be removed because there is no way to retract the spring-loaded pins at the ends.  No, it is not welded or glued in place.  If you look at this photo comparing the 6X pin to the 7X pin (installed) you can see the 6X pin is designed to allow the spring-loaded pin to be retracted.  The 7X has no such design. I have tried with a very thin blade to retract the 7X pin and there's no even space to retract it far enough. You'd have to get a second blade in there to "hold" the pin in it's current location and then move the other blade to the end to retract it more.  There's just not enough room if you had the coordination to pull it off.  I think the only way to remove it is with a Dremel or jeweler's saw.   Of course, then it is useless so if the 6X pins don't fit your $1,000 watch has just become a pocket watch!  No good.

For me, the photo I took makes it appear the pin diameter of the 6X is larger than the pin diameter of the 7X.  If so, we have to hope the receiving pin hole is large enough to handle the 6X pin.

  • @nicknook You won't be able to install the fixed bar version on the 7s.  There is no way to get the hardware to pass between the bezel and pin.  I tried it with my Mankey band I was using on my 6X.

  • By "not removable" we mean it can not be removed because there is no way to retract the spring-loaded pins at the ends.  No, it is not welded or glued in place.

Instinct spring bars look exactly as those "new" springbars...
Once I have put some Instinct springbars on my Fenix 6. Same length but the Instinct horns got holes where you can push a paperclip to push the spring. Not the Fenix 6. not the Epix 2 or F7X....
So I was stuck because I could not (even with a sharp blade" have enough force to move their spring back.

Eventually I have just gently bent the spring bar in the middle. I have use the plier of my Leatherman and pop the spring bar out. It was not permanently bent. I suspect a 26mm springbar should be even easier.
Then it would be need to be replaced with 26mm Fenix 6 springbars.
This is what I would do...

  • Thanks Range and ItsMeKen for the answers... Very disappointing, for the thickness in the picture being such a close up could be that the diameter is not bigger for the f6 pin, however itbreally looks impossible to remove the originals without destroying them... Bummer!

  • I took my Mankey band I have been using on my 6X and was able to double the band material and get it through the fixed spring pin on my 7X.  I used a thin cloth ribbon to pull it through.  Started on one side first and then pulled it through.  It's a tight fit to be sure, but didn't damage the pin or the band material.  This gives me some confidence that the Mankey band for non-removable spring pins should work with the 7X.  Bummer than we have to buy something we already have just because Garmin decided to switch to this non-removable pin.

  • @NemoSandman I am too chicken to apply enough force to bend the 7X pins to remove them.  All that force would end up at the ends of the pins and be transferred to the bezel.  If you have a 7 and are willing to try it and are successful installing 6 pins let us know.  Post a photo if you do showing the 6X pin in a 7X.

  • That's interesting... Though takes a bit of courage Slight smile just thinking... Possibly they are using instinct bars for stock reasons and they will come to reason and bring back the f6 bars also on f7? Thinking
