Higher occurrence of HRM dropout on v10 vs v9 or v9.10

So I've been watching the data gathered from my 5X Plus over the last couple of months, and the graphs on Connect show that there is a higher occurrence of HRM dropout on v10.

Mine are with the cycling and mostly indoor cycling. After 15 minutes, and usually in the early 20 minute range, the HRM will drop to a high resting rate, then slowly start to climb back to normal. Sometimes it happens more than once. It NEVER happens in the first 15 minutes.

I've read all the forums about watch tightness, yada yada. I've been wearing the watch since it came out, tracked all my activities that I use it for, and this has been the only time I'm started to have a consistent HRM issue like this. It's show to be more consistent in v10

  • I was really just posting my experience, in case anyone else noticed the trend. Thanks.

  • That's fine. But if you want Garmin to look at what you believe is a problem then obviously they're the people to speak to. FWIW I have not noticed any difference. Granted I'm outdoors - it's summer up here in the South, but I do ride my bike and that's where I'd expect to see more differences.

Does this happen with other activities? It's not beyond the realms of possibility that changes made to the OHR to appease some users could negatively affect others who might not have had issues before.

Such is the nature of trying to improve something that is unlikely to be able to fully functional for 100% of users. As a number of us have said, overall, OHR functionally has improved over the years. But it is not, and is unlikely ever to be, as good as or as reliable as a strap detecting the electrical signals from the heart rather than interpreting changes in skin colour from blood flow.

  • So, let me first say that as I indicated above, it's a trend I've noticed since v10, as compared to all my activities over the last year. And it was really just an observation. I honestly don't expect Garmin will just fix it at this point. There may not be anything to fix. But many, like myself, just check the forums to see if someone else has noticed the issue. So that's why I posted it.

Next, while I appreciate your input, and the fact that you have not seen the issue, you are just one person. If you don't see it, then good for you. I do find it odd that your FIRST post was three words "Contact Garmin support". And then you later decide to provide me a three paragraph lecture on the purpose of Garmin Support. I know what Garmin Support is, and have used it. In this case I did not feel the need.

If you felt a response was really needed, you simply could have said "I have not seen this issue"...

Thank you again for your input!

  • three paragraph lecture on the purpose of Garmin Support.

I think it was only the first sentence...

But if you want Garmin to look at what you believe is a problem then obviously they're the people to speak to.

I then noted exactly as you suggested that...

FWIW I have not noticed any difference.

    I then asked you...

Does this happen with other activities?

which you have not answered. Knowing this might help us understand whether the issue is specific to cycling or affects all your activities.

So, if you would take a few minutes to climb down of your high horse (which I acknowledge I might have caused you to get on because you started yet another thread about optical heart rate issues and that put me on my high horse) and let us know if you see this with other activities.

  • Oh yeah, that caught my eye.
Also falls from high frequency on low.

  • So, out for a bike ride this afternoon - F6 on left wrist, F5+ on right wrist both on OHR and a 945 on the handlebars connected to a HRM_Run. A picture saves a thousand words

  • The purpose of this forum is for 5+ users to share their experiences, often as a means of understanding if the observed behavior is isolated or a larger problem that warrants logging a support ticket.  As such, I'd suggest that a forum discussion like this is a better first step than calling Garmin Support immediately, and if the discussion reveals a bigger problem then reference the forum post in an official ticket.

  • I experience similar behavior with the OHR for fitness activities, such as Cardio and Bike.  I've been through two 5+'s and I don't think I've been through a single workout where the heart rate hasn't dropped at some point, and since v10 I have noticed drops to 60 or 70 bmp that are much longer in duration.  I haven't taken a close look at the data but it's a trend I've definitely noticed during workouts since upgrading to v10.  I haven't bothered calling Garmin Support about it because I've been down that road before and it was a very poor experience that wasn't worth my time.

  • Pic 1 it's SW 9.X

    Pic 2 it's SW 10
