Vo2 Max no longer being measured

I have been using my epix gen 2 for a few months.

My only sport activities are hiking and skiing. Since I started using it, my vo2 max score has been updating roughly on a daily basis. To be clear, when I say "updating" I don't mean that the score changed (it has been stable at 48 for months) but that the watch indicated on the screen that the score had been taken recently (on that same day or the prior day).

This updating used to occur whether or not I engaged in a hiking (or skiing) activity:  apparently, just casually walking around the city with the watch on was sufficient for the watch to take a new measurement.

Since last June 4 (over a month ago now), the watch has stopped updating the vo2 max score entirely even though I have continued wearing it as before (and went on a few hard hikes as well since). The screen on the watch continues to say "June 4" at the bottom of the vo2max screen since then.

Can anyone help?

  • Yes, absolutely correct, thank you! The same thing was confirmed by the support team. The only strange thing was that like 50 days passed and I don't get new reading, but as per support team most likely no activity was qualified to provide VO2 max.

    Running Activity With GPS

This activity type yields the most accurate overall VO2 max estimate and will be given priority over all other activity types.

    • Example: You record a Run activity with GPS, which generates a VO2 max estimate. This VO2 max estimate will display in Garmin ConnectTm account and will only update over the next 30 days if you record additional Run activities with GPS. Other activity types below in this list will only update the overall VO2 max estimate when the most recent Run activity with GPS is older than 30 days.

  • Anyone get anywhere on this with Garmin? My last Vo2 max was June 5th (seems something changed for all of us around start of June!) I never had to record activities before, the moveIQ would detect and my watch seemed to update it automatically. Will try a run at the weekend to see if it works but it definitely was updating daily/every few days until start of June (something definitely changed then on the Garmin side!)

  • Hi Garmin

Thanks for the reply however it doesn' tsolve the problem as can be seen on numerous posts. I do run for more than 20 mins and have GPS enabled as can be seen in Connect  but my calculations haven't been updated since November. What is the solution or is this an issue with the epix pro gen 2. This is extremely frustrating as it was one of the reasons for buying the watch

Help / a solution would be appreciated or a refund.

    Thanks

  • Hi, have you checked your HR zones are set up correctly? As for VO2max calculation you need your training activity to be in HR Zone 3 or higher. Normally hiking/walking in HR Zone 2 will not do.

You may want to check my suggestions further in this tread https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-540-series/401273/no-measurements-of-vo2max-and-training-conditions-since-moths

In fact Garmin does not use the user-defined HR Zones for practically anything. What matters though a lot, is the Max HR. HR Zones are more or less just a tool for visualizing the HR data, but are not used internally. To get a VO₂max estimate you need to stay 10 continuous minutes above 70% of the Max HR. I get an update of VO₂max practically every day.

On the other hand, the value is very stable, at most people, and it can easily happen that it does not change for several months. So if you see always the same value in your stats, it does not necessarily mean that it was not detected. It simply means that it did not change. In fact, you can see much better the daily VO₂max values on the VO₂max chart on the Training Status page (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/-1/all/last_four_weeks), than on the VO₂max report self showing only weekly averages.

  • Trux: the issue that I and others are having is not that our vo2max reading does not change over time, which, as you say, could be a expected: it is that we are not getting any new reading, whether the same or different from the prior reading.

I wear the watch every day 24 hours a day. My last reading is dated September 14, 2024. This is the last day I did a running activity. I have since done countless walks and hikes with heart rates above 80% of max HR for hours at a time and have not gotten any new reading.

  • Hmm, is it so that Garmin calculates VO2max for cycling, running, and XC skiing only? And not for hikes or walks? Just because it can't calculate power in those other activities.

  • I keep getting inconsistent information on this point from Garmin support itself (in addition to highly opinionated and well meaning users on the forum).   One thing support has stated consistently is that I should at least be getting new readings simply from wearing the watch continuously 30 days after the last running or cycling activity.  This is not the case in my experience.

The information describing the required criteria is available on Garmin's Support website:

No, that is not sufficient. You have to record a Walk or a Running activity, and remain for minimally 10 continuous minutes over the 70% of your Max HR during it.

The VO₂max from the all-day HR (without recording any Walk or Run activity) is no more available.
