Epix Gen 2: no way to have "Wrist Gesture" working during an activity with Always On Display set to OFF

I've received a week ago a Epix Gen 2 (16 Gb memory, no sapphire glass) updated to the latest 13.22 firmware. While I have no problem in getting the display ON when i rotate the wrist when I'm in GENERAL USE, there is no way to have the same settings working DURING ACTIVITY, although the display settings are as follows:

Display -> During Activity:

     Always On Display: OFF

     Brightness: set to max

     Wrist Gesture: ON

     Timeout: 8 seconds

I entered the settings directly from the watch or alternatively from the App on my smartphone but I don't see any differences in the (faluty) behavior of the Epix. I tried to restart the Epix a fiew times with no results. Changing the Touchscreen ON or OFF does not solve the problem. Every time I start a Run, after 8 seconds the display becomes dark and is not activated by wrist rotation. To display the running data I need to press a button or to touch the screen (when Touchscreen is ON). The display turns on automatically only when an interval is reached (every km in my case).

What I'm doing wrong?

I know there is a possibility to assign different Power Modes to different activities but I would like to avoid to add that layer of complexity, furthermore I do no see a specific setting for "Wrist Gesture" in the Power Mode menu.

Thanks for your help.

  • Ahh... Let's see what will happen on the next firmware

    Thanks anyways!

  • IMPORTANT UPDATE: my Epix Gen 2 16 GB started to behave (mostly) correctely after I made a new syncronization (using the provided USB cable) with the Garmin Express application on a computer that is different from the one I initially used when I received the sportwatch. The first syncronization (and a couple of additional ones) was made with a state of the art 2022 MacBook Pro with the Silicon Apple M1 Max processor. Than I went on vacation with a much older Mac (MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.4 15" Early 2013). I downloaded the Garmin Express App, connected the Epix Gen 2 and made a syncronization (no firmware update occurred). In the first run I made after that, the device started to respond to wrist gesture with Always On Display set to OFF. It does work about 70% of the time (I guess I have to get familiar with the wrist gesture during my runs). While I can't find a rational reason for this change in behavior after re-synchronizing with a different computer, it is unlikely that some other factor is solving the problem (I haven't changed any settings on my Epix and the firmware release is still the same 13.22). The sad thing is that when installing the Garmin Express software on my old Mac I got a warning that support for that platform (I guess they mean Macs with Intel processors or with macOS Big Sur) will end on August 22, 2023.

  • Sounds interesting by the way... 70%... I'll try it on my Surface Pro 9 instead of my desktop. I'm hoping we can finally enjoy running with our Epix during time trials without any problems!

  • I guess this was a specific issue in my setup. I do not expect that a significant percentage of wrist gesture issues could be fixed in this way.

  • I know 70% is not ideal, but it's a huge improvement from 0%.
