Epix Gen 2: no way to have "Wrist Gesture" working during an activity with Always On Display set to OFF

I've received a week ago a Epix Gen 2 (16 Gb memory, no sapphire glass) updated to the latest 13.22 firmware. While I have no problem in getting the display ON when i rotate the wrist when I'm in GENERAL USE, there is no way to have the same settings working DURING ACTIVITY, although the display settings are as follows:

Display -> During Activity:

     Always On Display: OFF

     Brightness: set to max

     Wrist Gesture: ON

     Timeout: 8 seconds

I entered the settings directly from the watch or alternatively from the App on my smartphone but I don't see any differences in the (faluty) behavior of the Epix. I tried to restart the Epix a fiew times with no results. Changing the Touchscreen ON or OFF does not solve the problem. Every time I start a Run, after 8 seconds the display becomes dark and is not activated by wrist rotation. To display the running data I need to press a button or to touch the screen (when Touchscreen is ON). The display turns on automatically only when an interval is reached (every km in my case).

What I'm doing wrong?

I know there is a possibility to assign different Power Modes to different activities but I would like to avoid to add that layer of complexity, furthermore I do no see a specific setting for "Wrist Gesture" in the Power Mode menu.

Thanks for your help.

  • I’ve been a happy user of a F5x since 2017 and time has come to upgrade but only because the battery has started to show signals of short duration.

I was considering a Epix 2 Pro but after reading all this problems with AOD I think the best would be buy the old Fenix 7x and save a lot of money.

Next one perhaps could be an amoled next generation .

    ps : I’m a cyclist.

  • There is no problem with the watch, LOL.  I have one and its amazing.  Look, the fact is if you are a cyclist, you will have a bike computer.  Period.  it's simply the better tool to use.  For everything else off the bike (99% of you day to day) the Epix is amazing.

I bike, run, swim, tennis and strength train 5 days a week.  I have a long history with Garmin coming from the 245M, F6 and now this.  I was on the fence about AMOLED, but man.. there is no going back.  Someone trying to use this on a bike as a sole device maybe disappointed with gesture.  yes.  But,.  I would never use the watch on the bike anyway, (but that is just me).  I wear it, but I use the dedicated bike computer.  MUCH better experience and also syncs with Garmin connect.

You have to sit down and calculate how many hours of your day makes sense for MIP / vs. AMOLED.  This is what I did.  and I came to the conclusion that AMOLED makes far more sense.

Not only that, I made a video showing how well gesture works both in general and on the bike.  It really depends on where your hands are on the bike.  Hoods, vs. top, vs drops.  So, keep that in mind.  I have done a few rides with the new watch and while I still look down at the computer, I can see the watch just fine when I glance down at it and turn my wrist in.  I think some of this seems over blown because it keeps going back and forth.  With things like this, its a give and take.  Sure, you can get the F7 and MIP screen.. but... what about the other 90% of your day where the AMOLED screen really shines?  Anyone about to spend $1K for that watch, can pony up another few hundred for a dedicated bike computer (I would think).  This way you have everything :-)

  • You keep touting there's no issue with the wrist gesture yet in your own video it works half the time.

Also your test is inconclusive to the issue discussed here, we're talking mostly about running or cycling in the field, for long distances, where the issue 100% appears for multiple users in this thread as described by each of them. If you have no issues I don't really understand why you're polluting the tread, minimizing the issue for other users who genuinely have problems with the gesture.

  • 7828711 It's nice that you are obviously very satisfied with your Epix, but please understand that there are other owners who are not 100% satisfied with this watch. I'm not saying the Epix is all bad, but the watch definitely has room for improvement. That's also the reason why there is a Beta-Program from Garmin, where you can report bugs or improvements that will hopefully be taken into account in future updates.

  • If I buy a sport watch and pay 650 Euro I do not want to be a beta tester, I just want to wear it and go running in the park. We are not talking about synchronized swimming or paragliding, it's just a basic and simple running activity.

  • Because I keep getting notifications of updates from this thread and keep seeing the comments.  I went to the effort to make the videos in the first place to see for myself.  But, in the real-world use, I just feel like people are being a bit too critical.  My god, I had the Apple Watch Ultra and it was just the same!  All of these gesture-based watches behave the same.  It's not 100% anything.  It's just not.  If it did not work, I would have returned it myself!

5 of the 12 people on my cycle team have either the Epix or the 965, we also run together, and no one is complaining when we sit and have coffee afterwards.  Some of you must have either a much different expectation or units that are worse than mine.

I just accept there is always going to be both limitations (and tradeoffs) from one type of watch (MIP) vs.AMOLED.  Gesture is one of them.  It's just not going to be perfect in all situations.  This goes back to my advice on "the right tool for the job"   For the bike, I would never want or expect this to work great.  (Safety alone), need to keep vision front and center so a center mounted computer with a larger screen is much better.  Running, it works just fine when you bring your wrist up to look at stats.  Everything else, it works just fine.

Anyway, I won't reply anymore.  I know it's not helpful.  Sorry.

  • I just (wrongly) assumed that if the wrist gesture works flawlessly for a 100 Euro Honor Amoled smartwatch, it should be working for a 650 Euro Garmin

  • As has already been mentioned, wrist gesture is always going to be a bit random because it depends on so many variables. My Epix Pro wrist gesture works perfectly for me with the way I exercise. That doesn't mean it would work for you, and it doesn't mean your 100 Euro Honor Amoled watch would work for me.

IMO the Epix Pro is the best smartwatch on the market. Is it perfect? Of course not. Is there competition? Obviously. But all things considered, I still think the Epix Pro is the best product in the category.

And you're not a beta tester unless you want to be. Please don't conflate periodic updates with being a beta tester. Would you rather Garmin didn't try to constantly improve their product software and features?

I know dozens of people who use the Epix for running and I have never heard a single complaint about the wrist gesture feature. I'm not saying you're making it up, but I am saying that it works darned well for a lot of people.

  • The point is making a product - in this case an Epix Pro - continuously better. The fact that most owners are satisfied does not mean that the watch is perfect. I assume that in addition to jogging and swimming, cycling is the most used sport with this watch and in this respect it should also be usable when it comes to cycling. And before anyone writes that there are dedicated devices for cycling, let them be reminded that many would certainly like to use the watch in triathlons, where changing devices is suboptimal. As I already wrote, it would certainly not be a big problem for Garmin to integrate improved gesture control, which I think can also be deactivated. So everyone would have the choice to use this, or leave it alone if the default setting works well in the use case. It's not about badmouthing the watch, but about making the Epix better in some areas.
