v9.36 Official Software Fast Battery Drain

I'm going through the battery in 24-48 hours. No apps or fields installed. No GPS activities. Also having sync issues where I have to kill the connect app on Android to get it to sync. I had the same issues on beta now it persists into the production release

  • I'm a Garmin Custom since Fenix 3 days. Used plenty of betas and reported bugs directly to Garmin. So, before making bolt claims like yours....

And yes, for my Epix I decided to not participate to the Alpha/Beta program because other than in the past when I still used automatic watches as my daily watch and my Fenix just for hiking/climbing, I used it as a daily and want something stable. Still doesn't give you the right of your tone (and RickM) towards Garmin. As I said, they didn't force you too

  • They do not force you, thats true, BUT when they bring out a update that seems to give so much troubles it is not ok. As a customer one can expect that Garmin will bring quality updates/software in these price ranges. I have 2 friends who sadly for them updated and they both have batterydrain and some other isues, i told them to forward that to Chris or the forum or contact support or whatever, accidents can happen but at least own it and make sure that it gets fixed fast, Even if it might be callibrtaion isues, then it is still weird that a watch that was about 50% charged is dead/empty the next day after the update. I am still so glad i did disable updates :) but not everyone is so fortunate.

I would like to know what do you consider "bolt claims" ?

Trying to find solutions ? Trying different things to understand how the drain is happening ?
Trying to understand why despite 4 threads on Battery drain in the Beta forums on 9.33 it has been released ?
    Just trying to have answers.

And if you read my last comments my last step is contacting Garmin France and trying Battery calibration.

So please let stay on solutions and helping and not judging other users reactions.
You were not part of the Beta testers, so... what is your point anyway ? That nobody forced us to be beta testers ?

But beta testing is not the issue. It is the fact that some of us have blown the whistle AS REQUESTED.
"If you encounter a bug while using Beta software, please report the issue under the appropriate section within the Beta Bug Reports forum."
But we were not listened/answered after reporting the battery drain. And we were many. :-)
This is one of the issue and this one is in their process... So it can be also improved.

    Why ?
I currently don't know. Perhaps that issue was not reproduced by the Beta crew ? Perhaps because of the release schedule ?

And there is nothing against Garmin. I'm certain they got their own reason but I'm looking forward their next step.
(How you can judge the tone of a comment. Have you seen any emoji or multi exclamation points on my messages to confirm your assumption ?)

  • What do you mean by “using” Strava segments, Chris? I sync Strava segments to my Garmin devices but haven’t used my Epix to record a ride since before the recent firmware update.

If any Strava segments are active that can be used on your watch, they might be causing the fast drain. Since the v9.33 release, many have confirmed their fast battery drain stopped once their segments were turned off for now while the cause is found on our end.

  • Same here, terrible battery life, but after switching of live strava segments my epix have her normal battery life back

  • This is Gesture only ON and OEM Watchface. Nothing different to my previous use of the Epix before 9.33....
It has double its electricity consumption....

It is as much as with Always On Display !!!   (Actually AOD is still in the norm in terms of battery draining, so ...  AOD users won't see any difference ! )

I am truly sorry you are experiencing short battery life on Software Version 9.33.

This may be a stupid question, but looking at your photos here, I notice you are using some third party battery widgets.

Have these third party widgets been updated since you installed 9.33?

If not, do you think it is possible that these widgets are not optimized for use with the new software 9.33?  Thus causing the unexplained battery drain?

Sounds too simple, I know, but worth a shot removing these third party widgets, resetting your watch, and seeing if the battery drain problem is still there?

    Just a thought, my friend.

    HTH

  • Yes a lot seems to get solved by strava users who turn segments of, but there seem to be also a lot who not even have strava  and still have that battery drain. So it is not only strava segments.

  • Have these third party widgets been updated since you installed 9.33?

If not, do you think it is possible that these widgets are not optimized for use with the new software 9.33?  Thus causing the unexplained battery drain?

Thank you for the nice words my friend. :-)
Last update by developpers of those widgets have been done in June and August. But both are coherent and find the same results with the % displayed by the Garmin. Only the prediction of the Epix is still proposing 16 days of stamina at full charge when the widgets propose after calculation only 8 days. (6 days on AOD like the Garmin prediction)

So funny/strange enough the battery drain is not noticeable while in AOD. SO I discover this mode which is beautiful.
I even experiment AOD with no gesture.

But I do trust next week Garmin will find a solution. Those watches are so complicated, it takes time to dive into all possibilities for that kind of subtil issue. Anyway mine is still operational as 6 days of stamina is totally normal in AOD mode with gesture..
It is just "Gesture Only" which is sucking juice from somewhere.
But like Trux has said it could be also an issue with calibration... I have charged up to 100% and will let it die and charge again and see if I can calibrate it. :-)

  • I'm also having quite clear battery drain, but it has already been present for a few weeks (I'm in the beta program). Now I get about 6 days of battery (AOD off) and before it was easily 10-11 days with the same amount of exercise. I managed to get 14 days while I was traveling and not doing any sports. What has changed? I don't have strava.

  • But I do trust next week Garmin will find a solution.

And I trust that next week Garmin will have received FAA approval for the new tactix7 software Fingers crossed
