Epix 2 - software version 8.18 - Release Candidate

Hello Fēnix 7 and Epix customers,

The next public beta version is now available for your watch!

This update, v8.18, is a Release Candidate. "Release Candidate" means that this exact software version is planned to “go Live” as a public update as long as no critical issues are observed. All copies of version 8.18 will be identical, so there are no differences in functionality whether you install version 8.18 as a Public Release Candidate or wait for the update to be a Live public update.

If you’ve participated in the Beta Program with previous Fēnix product lines, you’ll notice a few changes from how we have managed this in the past. And further down the line, we’ll have some additional improvements to the Beta Program (more on that later!) Notably, the fēnix 7/Epix watches use one single update file to update system software and peripheral updates (GPS version, Wireless version, etc.) So you no longer need to install multiple update files. Additionally, this forum post is now the primary resource for reading the change log notes – they are not available on another webpage. (There will be more options for viewing change logs after we implement the additional improvements to our beta program.)

The link to download the software update is listed below. Please note that your computer will download a .zip file when you open this link.

  • This zip contains the software update and instructions for installation in the 'Read Me.txt' file. We have also provided a folder with the files necessary for backdating software, and instructions for this process if you choose to do so. Remember, backdating software will reset all settings.
  • Please note: the included secure_config.gcd file should also be installed to your watch. This file will enable a few "beta features." For example, it will provide you with the option to reboot your watch (turn off and automatically turn back on). It will also automatically generate some files if you encounter certain issues. In short, if you are using beta software, you should also always have this file installed: it will make your use of the watch easier, and make it easier for you to report issues in software.
  • Please email the Garmin Outdoor Quality Team if you find issues in software after installing this update: [email protected]

After updating, your watch will be running the following software versions. These can be confirmed on the Menu – System – About pages.

  • Sensor Hub: 18.02
  • Epix Touch Screen: 10.07

  • Had another issue: watch restarted randomly outside of an activity today. Had these reboots frequently until I got a new watch a couple of weeks ago.

The other difference was the very prominent and continuous vibrations witnessed before the reboot.

Email sent to the beta team.

  • I simply can not install this update. Files copied to the proper places as usual, on the watch update available pops up, then prepping update and restart. Result: successfully updated to 8.16 (yes i downloaded 8.18 :D checked twice, copied files 2 times to the watch) . If I'm checking system about it says 8.16. If i check software update menu then 8.18 is available. If i press install the same happens -- 8.16 successfully updated. If i leave the watch then update available pops up again after few hours, If i press install then the same happens.. I wouldnt like to do hard reset and start from 0 again it's a pain.. It would be nice to implement the same feature what Edge has.. I hate to setup my data fields again and again..

  • i was to curious.. After a hard reset i successfully updated to 8.18 but I had to start from scratch again :( At least round trip course is fixed :)

  • Hello Garmin

After a long wait, I finally got the Epix 2 here the other day and immediately upgraded to software version 7.35. I then took the watch for a run paired to my Airpods Pro (music was stored on the watch and my iPhone was left at home) and after a few hiccups in the music the headset and watch finally disconnected completely. I had to stop the run and then tried multiple times to connect the headphones to the watch without any luck. A couple of days later I had a run with my older Jaybird X2's resulting in the exact same situation (hiccups in the music where after the headphones and watch disconnected completely).

I then tried to upgrade to the 8.18 release candidate firmware and then took a bike ride with the watch and the Airpods Pro where the exact same thing happened again (hiccups and disconnect).

Yesterday I phoned the Danish store where I bought the watch and they suggested me wearing the watch on my left wrist. I also phoned Garmin support where I telling me more or less the same thing.

Today I made a test walk with the watch on my left arm and after five minutes of walk, the watch and the Airpods Pro finally disconnected.

Do you have any suggestion to what to do / try next? Is there a specific headphone brand or model, which are better suited for the Epix 2? If I am unable to solve the issue, I have to return the watch and I naturally hopes that this will not be the case.

    Best regards
    Jonas

  • I used shokz open run pro for several runs and bike rides with 0 issues. Had drops with galaxy buds before over and over. I wear the watch on my left wrist.

  • What's wrong with training effects? Show heart rate chart.

I hope you train with a chest heart rate monitor?

  • Great work on keeping the updates rolling out guys, thank you.

I have noticed with this version that the incident detection is going off when running (only at maybe 5 or 6 mph) almost every time I stop (not abruptly or any different than I did on previous beta versions).

On a gentle 10 mile run today, avg pace 9.30min miles, it must have gone off 5 or 6 times.

Has this changed or should I revert to the previous beta version?

Apologies if this has been posted/asked before. I have had the watch since it was first available in the UK and haven't had this issue before.

  • TE's working fine for me as well. 4.5 / 3.0 yesterday. Skull

  • The latest beta 8.18 did fix the issue for sure. In Garmin Connect, my settings in Audio Prompts are to announce the average lap pace every lap, and it is working.

Previously, the bug was that the announcement was the overall pace average, regardless of settings in GC. This bug is not present any longer.
