Why No AI for X30, G2, fenix

The new garmin X30 looks good but has no AI.

Can someone at garmin explain why AI is only for the descent and X50 line.  Do they really believe Descent owners will not feel special or feel inferior or cheated if AI is only offered on all dive lines?

Why not make it available to everyone? So whoever is willing to pay £430 for a pod, can.

  • I agree, it would have been nice to have AI on the X30 especially given the professional looking form factor of it and on the G2 as well.

On the Fenix 8 I can understand not having AI, as its geared as a more general purpose device.

I'm no marketing or product placement expert but I assume no AI would be to keep the cost down and to not cut into sales of other devices like the X50i and Mk3i.

I've owned nearly every Fenix, Epix 2, FR965 and Descent G1 and an Oceanic ATOM 2 with AI (14 years old still worked) for diving.

I eventually sold them all and got the Mk3i with T2 and very happy with it as it does everything I need.

  • Why not make it available to everyone?

Because AI requires additional hardware (ultrasonic sender and receiver) for communicating with the transceivers. And neither X30, nor G2 or Fenix 8 have any such hardware, hence there is no Air Integration possible with those models. If you need AI, you have to buy a product equipped with the necessary hardware. And, of course, that comes at a cost, which people who do not want or need AI, would not be happy to be charged for.

  • You post regularly on forums, and its usually very helpful but I dont understand why you seem to deliberately ignore the clear premise of my question.

Obviously its more hardware, my point is its not even an option on the garmin lines in the title, it should be an option on every dive capable computer imo

  • X30 it's just cheaper version of X50i, something like MK3 and MK3i.

    It is so simple.

  • it should be an option on every dive capable computer imo

As I wrote, it would raise the cost even for those who do not want any AI. That's why having different hardware versions is preferable for everyone.

  • The price is the price thats a seperate issue, these are expensive pieces of kit generally.

G2 only comes in one size, fenix 8 in all sizes but no ai, but descent has no 47mm version but with option with/without ai.

the X30 is a dedicated dive computer with no additional smart features, almost exactly like X50 but no AI and smaller. So the £630 difference in cost is due to 0.6inch extra screen size, minor additional dive features and ai.

I get the market for variations is limited for many commercial reasons but I can't see how the extra hardware is not an option on dedicated dive computers, which X line and G2 are even if Fenix isnt primarily aimed at divers.

Separate to the above not everyone wants or needs the messaging features of subwave, there should be a transmitter that just reports pressure.  I think they should bring back the T1, which i have kept hoping I can use it again, No luck there!

  • Not exactly, X30 has less features in addition to size and ai differences. compare them on the garmin website.

  • What kind of AI functions do you think a dive computer should have?
Are there any specific AI features you feel are missing in the X50i right now?

  • I think AI should show tank pressure, thats important info to be directly infront of you.

The messaging is a great idea in principle, with the new garmin buoy there could be real time awareness of what's happening underneath to those on the surface, but it has no range and without this its just a v expensive gimmick outside select commercial utility, unless VLF tech can be shrunk into an AI transmitter pod i dont see this ever being viable

As for X50i, I dont follow, I didnt say there was anything missing with it,  i said the X30 has missing dive features wrt X50i

  • The current division of features between the X30 and X50i models results from the company’s product policy.
If the X30 had integration with a tank pressure transmitter, it would significantly impact X50i sales — given the substantial price difference between these two models, most customers would choose the X30, and almost no one would buy the X50i.

The X30 was designed as a response to lower-priced competitor dive computers, which also do not offer air integration. This is simply how the market has evolved — whether we like it or not.
