Broken Glass on MK3i after first dive...

I am so annoyed.  I just got a Mk3i after my epix start/stop button ceased to work.  Tried all the factory reset and update tricks but no go, it's only 17 months old!.

So I bought the Mk3i Descent to replace this and now be my new dive computer as well but after my first dive last night, I dropped the watch in gravel when I took it off to remove my wetsuit.  I heard a crunch but thought, 'I hope the sapphire glass is tougher than the tempered glass'. Picked it up and didn't see any issue with the watch face, just assumed it was my feet crunching the gravel.

Today I took it off to change the bands and noticed the glass over the HR sensor is completely shattered! Now so is my heart.  For such an extremely expensive watch I'm annoyed that the glass can break this easily.

I have previously had the Fenix 7 without the sapphire glass and that was beaten around and stood on, sat on without any issues or scratches.  So to say I'm dissapointed in a watch that is significantly more cost and has the sapphire glass is an understatement.  Especially after the epix button stopped working.

Are Garmin loosing their quality?

I really hope I can get some answers tomorrow when I contact them - after my dives with my older computer :(, I am assuming that having the HR sensor screen busted on the back means it's lost it's waterproofness.

  • Really??
You really complain that you drop down watch and something broke??
    And it is Garmin fault??

First of all, sapphire glass is on the watch face not on HR sensor.

I had couple Garmin watches since Fenix 3, all were sapphire and never had any issues.
Yes, bezel always had some scratches, but watch face never and to be clear, I never cover watch face any protective glass.

  • "Are Garmin loosing their quality?"

Glass is glass. If you drop it, it might break...

  • Update.

Garmin have been absolutely wonderful, contacted them to discuss the Epix pro button not working - they have contacted the seller to arrange for a refund.

the descent is going back to them for replacement (cost of $245 which would fix the broken sensor glass).  So easy to deal with, and the man I spoke to was absolutely wonderful.

I didn't realise the sensor glass on the back wasn't as tough as the front glass, maybe it should be given it does some diving?? but now I know this about the sensor glass. .

Also my niece has my old Fenix 7 pro, it's still going strong on her - She's a large animal vet and has gotten the watch caught in a cattle crush - no issues.  So we are both good advertisements for garmin in how tough the Fenix series is.

  • NIce to hear that you were able to solve all issues.
