Software 19.34 Completely Wrecked Apnea In-Dive Data Screen!!!

Change log for 19.34 states that it "Improved apnea in-dive data screen layout".  However, it is quite the opposite!  The in-dive screen is now limited to a maximum of 5 fields, which include asymmetric layouts, forced mixing of small and large data fields, and lots of wasted, blank screen space.  The previous layout option included six equally sized, well spaced data fields that could be logically organized (which could mirror the surface screen layout and is common on most other activities) is now gone... bring it back!!!

  • When you say in-dive, you mean the data screen while you are underwater, right ?

Can you provide an image of what it looks like ?

Before I do the update, i want to make sure. :)

  • Correct, the underwater data screen.

I can't get an image to load, but the new layout with the maximum number of 5 data fields has 3 vertically stacked data fields towards the top (lowest one being larger font than all other fields) and 2 side by side horizontal fields at the bottom.  Only 3 of the fields are configurable, the other 2 are locked in position and data type.  The upper left and right of the screen is all empty space.

Plus, the top most data field does not have a label, but all of the others do.  And the labels are placed above 3 of the fields but to the side of the large font field (basic design school fail).  The label for the top 2 fields is in-between them, so you don't know which is which without interpreting the data.

It looks like they copied the layout from the (horribly buggy) Fenix 8 apnea in dive screen.   The other layouts are similar but with fewer data fields (and still with 2 fields that are locked in both location and data) and even larger discrepancy in text sizes.

  • i don't have an issue at least when opening the apnea app. not sure if that will be the case with actual data...

  • Is this only in APNEA activity or in the APNEA(HUNT) also ?

The in-dive screen is not something I ever look at, but anyway. Did you notice any issues with the surface screens ?

  • This is the surface screen. It's my understanding that the issue is with the data screen while you are underwater.

  • The change was made to the dive screen, NOT the surface screen(s).  Previously the dive screen could be configured just like the surface screen, with 6 equally sized, spaced and labeled data fields.

It looks like they changed the apnea hunt layout as well.

  • I am not an Mk3 owner but I sympathise with your frustration. One of the nice things of Garmin watches is the fully customisable data screen/data fields. And  it’s not ideal (to use gentle words) when a new firmware version reduces the number of fields or the level of customisation.

I do hope Garmin can address asap this so-called ‘improvement’.

Being a (recreational) freediver, this new limitation is discouraging me to upgrade to Mk3 even if it can be avoided by keeping older fw versions.
