Descent Mk3i unpaired with phone after update. the watch shows a "Need wireless 28.15" message when trying to pair phone and fails pairing

Once the last update was completed, my new Garmin descent mk3i watch would not connect with my phone that was previously paired with the watch. Now when I try to manually pair in settings -> Connectivity -> Phone -> Pair Phone, the message shows "Initializing" message for a second and then shows "Need wireless 28.15" message and then fails to connect. I deleted the pairing with the watch on my phone's bluetooth menu. Did a reset of the watch but I still continue to get the same status. Is the update broken? How do I fix this?

PS: I also tried connectivity -> wifi -> Add network on the watch with my phone's hotspot turned on. The watch goes into "searching for Wifi Networks" for a long time and fails to find the network.
