Descent Mkiii Problems

We just got our Descent Mkiii watches for an upcoming dive trip. My wife's 43mm watch will not updated from software v. 15.57 to 16.25 which means that the diver locate feature will not work (a deciding factor in spending this kind of money).

Additionally, my 51mm watch decided to disconnect from my iPhone 13 Pro Max and will not reconnect over the last several hours despite repeated attempts. We're leaving tomorrow and giving serious consideration to sending these brand new watches back before we go. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Restart your watch and phone, it should start to work after.
Regarding updates, try to use Garmin Express on your computer, it will also do maps update.
BTW, underwater communication works only with T2 transmiter, I assume you have at least one.

  • I had done that several times before it finally took, but now it is going all the way through a fresh re-sync. This took over an hour first time out of the box. How often does this happen? Between the connectivity on mine and my wife's watch refusing to update the software I'm really thinking about sending these back. It's way too much money to be anything other than rock solid...

  • You need to be a bit patient, but it works quite nicely as a dive computer.

However, there are a few annoying bugs which can be handled if you know how to avoid them.

Don't use  DND and sleep mode during dives, this will deactivate always on during dives. Garmin is aware of it but takes time to fix it.

As Adam said you should use a PC with USB cable and Garmin Connect. I did it on MacBook. It may require several attempts

What is the diver locate feature?

A day might be a bit short to get familar with the device.

  • For me it works fine, I had couple restarts in last few months I'm using my MK3i but nothing serious.
One more advice, besides of Garmin Dive you also need to install Garmin Connect on your mobile.
Garmin dive is only for dive activities, everything else you will have in Garmin Connect, also Connect is responsible for all synchronization and have to run on background.
Having WiFi configured on the watch also helps because then part of communication will be done in background over WiFi.

Have fun and good dive trip (for this part I'm jealous, I planned one week dive safari this year but my family just make it not possible for now :( ).

  • Might be OK, might be not, and it is not easy to compare because to many factors might be involved.
My yesterday run (50 minutes, GPS set to auto select, HRM-Pro strap connected over ANT+ and music played from the watch, no BT connection because I do my runs without my mobile) consumes 5% of the battery and it is typical for my watch, same results I had earlier on my Fenix 7X.

BTW I have Descent MK3i 51mm, question which exact model you have.
