indoor bike activity without sensors (Descent Mk3i v15.62)

I used to cycle in my gym static bikes, record my activity under "Bike Indoor"->"Free Ride" and input data form the gym bike in the Garmin Connect app after the activity.

With the last update (Garmin Descent Mk3i on v15.62) I was surprised to see that I was not able to record my activity anymore. The watch starts searching for a sensor, which I don't have, fails and does not start the activity.

Can you make a bike activity option with no sensor?

  • Hello

When recording the Indoor bike, if you first go to the indoor bike settings, and select Smart Trainer Options, then Free Ride, this is going to force the watch to search for the "Sensor" which is the smart trainer. If you are not trying to pair the watch with the smart trainer, than you would just select Indoor Bike, then start the activity.

Without pairing to the trainer, the watch will only track the time and HR from your wrist HR or paired HRM strap. This will not be able to see the distance, cadence etc. from the trainer. So you would need to manually edit this information into the activity once it is synced to the Connect account.

  • Hi Garmin-Laurie, after your explanation I somewhat got it. Let me just tell you it is not very intuitive.

For others having issues when starting recording a "Indoor Bike" activity without sensor:

    - select the "Bike Indoor" activity

    - when you are at "Trainer Options" menu (the one with "Free Ride", "Follow Workout", "Follow course", etc...) press back button (bottom right one)

    - start activity

The bottom line is: the behavior changed. Before you would select "Free Ride" in "Indoor Bike" and the user could start the activity. Now if you select any of the "Trainer Options", the watch will try to pair with a sensor.

  • Thanks for the step-by-step instructions! I got stuck trying to work around the "Free Ride" option.  The pressing the back button step cleared everything up.
